World Cup 2022: African football governing body supports Fifa’s call for unity

Sports, World News
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has supported Fifa’s call for unity and inclusion ahead of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. The host nation has been criticised for its stance on same-sex relationships, its human rights record and its treatment of migrant workers. Earlier this month, world governing body Fifa wrote to competing nations asking them to “now focus on the football” instead of the competition’s controversial build-up. However, Sepp Blatter, who was Fifa president when Qatar was awarded the tournament in 2010, stoked matters by saying that awarding the tournament to the Gulf state was “a mistake”. With the first game of the finals on 20 November, Caf president Patrice Motsepe has now echoed the support given by Conmebol, the South...

CAF re-opens bids for AFCON 2025

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has re-opened bids for the hosting rights of AFCON 2025 after they were taken away from original host Guinea. The CAF Executive Committee met on Saturday 1 October 2022 in Algiers, Algeria where the announcement was made. Guinea were stripped of the competition following a meeting on Friday in Conakry between Guinea’s interim president, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, and the president of African football’s governing body, Patrice Motsepe, to discuss the withdrawal after the west African country, among the poorest of the continent, said it was not ready to host the 24-nation tournament. In 2014, Guinea originally were awarded the hosting rights to the 2023 finals, along with Cameroon (2019) and Ivory Coast (2021). But Cameroon were strippe...

Indonesia: At least 174 dead in football stadium crush

International, Sports, World News
At least 174 people have died in a crush at an Indonesian football match that has become one of the world’s worst stadium disasters. About 180 were also hurt in aftermath of home team Arema FC’s loss to bitter rivals at the overcrowded stadium late on Saturday in Malang, East Java. The crush took place after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch. As panic spread, thousands surged towards Kanjuruhan stadium’s exits, where many suffocated. Fifa, the world’s governing football body, states that no “crowd control gas” should be carried or used by stewards or police at matches. One eyewitness told the BBC that police had fired numerous tear gas rounds “continuously and fast” after the situation with fans became “tense”. Fifa President Gianni Infantino said it was...

Ghana News, International, Sports
Ghana’s U-20 female team will look to pick up their first point at the ongoing FIFA World Cup when they take on Japan on Sunday, August 14. The game, scheduled for a 17:00 GMT kick off, could see the Black Princesses end their tournament earlier than they would have wanted depending on the other group game between USA and the Netherlands. The Black Princesses were brushed aside by USA in their opening game at the tournament, which is being staged in Costa Rica.  A 3-0 score and a red card to Jacqueline Owusu means Ben Fokuo’s side go into Sunday’s game with a must-win mentality if they are to sail through to the next round. The red card received on the opening day means Owusu will not be available for the game against the 2018 winners. Japan were 1-0 winners over the N...

The sprinter raced in the final of the 200m event on Saturday, August 6, and finished with a time of 20.49s. Joe Paul’s success on Saturday night sees him win Ghana’s first medal in the track event having seen Benjamin Azamati miss out on a medal in the 100m final. Ghana’s 4x100m relay team was also disqualified earlier on Saturday after the coaches did not inform race officials one hour to the race, as the rules require when replacing an athlete. His podium finish sees him become the first African to win a medal in the 200m event since 2006 while he also becomes the first Ghanaian to win a medal in 200m since George Daniels in 1974.
