Commonwealth Games: Joseph Paul Amoah wins bronze in men’s 200m event

National 200m record holder, Joseph Paul Amoah, has won bronze medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The sprinter raced in the final of the 200m event on Saturday, August 6, and finished with a time of 20.49s. Joe Paul’s success on Saturday night sees him win Ghana’s first medal in the track event having seen Benjamin Azamati miss out on a medal in the 100m final. Ghana’s 4x100m relay team was also disqualified earlier on Saturday after the coaches did not inform race officials one hour to the race, as the rules require when replacing an athlete. His podium finish sees him become the first African to win a medal in the 200m event since 2006 while he also becomes the first Ghanaian to win a medal in 200m since George Daniels in 1974.

Ghanaian sprinter, Sean Safo-Antwi, has promised to work on his start when he runs in the men's 100 metres semi-final on Wednesday for a place in the final. The national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms have returned to the country after winning a total of 45 medals to finish third at the 11th Africa Armwrestling Championships which ended last Friday (July 22, 2022) in Lagos. Sadio Mané has been crowned the Men’s African Player of the Year 2022 at the CAF Awards in Rabat, Morocco. The Bayern Munich forward beat former club teammate, Mohamed Salah and national colleague, Edouard Mendy to the win the award for the second year running after an impressive campaign which saw him impress for both club and country. Mané led Senegal to win their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in February when the competition was held in Cameroon, beating Egypt in the final.
