World Athletics Champs Day 1: Ghana’s sprinters to race, 100m begins, Allyson Felix bows out

Ghana’s national 100m record holder Benjamin Azamati, and 200m record holder Joseph Paul Amoah will fight for semifinal slots on the first day of the World Athletics championships. The men’s 100m begins on the opening day of the competition with preliminary round action at 12:30pm (GMT). The most successful medalist in World Athletics Championships history (18), Allyson Felix, will be competing in her final World Championships. Despite failing to qualify in her pet 400m event, trials secured her a discretionary pick to be on the mixed 4x400m relay. The event which concludes the night could see Felix pick up a 14th World Championships gold of her career. AshGold and Inter Allies appeals thrown out by GFA Appeals Committee

The Ghana Football Association’s Appeals Committee has dismissed the appeal cases filed by AshantiGold SC and Inter Allies FC over their respective misconduct decisions of the Disciplinary Committee. On May 16, 2022, the GFA Disciplinary Committee announced the demotion of AshGold and Inter Allies to the Division Two league at the end of the 2021/22 football season after they were found guilty of match manipulation in their 2020/21 Ghana Premier League match day 34 game. They were also fined 100,000 Ghana Cedis each. Owner of AshantiGold, Dr Kwaku Frimpong and CEO, Emmanuel Frimpong received 10 years and 8 years ban respectively. Black Stars vice-captain, Thomas Partey, will travel with the Arsenal squad to the United States for their pre-season tour. Partey was earlier reported to have been left out of the squad selected for the pre-season camp away from London having missed out on the initial one in Germany. However, the club on Wednesday confirmed that he will be part of the team which will travel to the US to continue their preparations ahead of the 2022/23 season. I won a first game,” said Platini on his acquittal. Prosecutors acquitted Blatter on charges of unlawfully funneling 2 million Swiss francs ($2.06 million) of FIFA funds to Platini, a former France national team captain and manager in 2011. The Technical Directorate of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has brokered a deal with three European clubs, namely: Borussia Dortmund, Darmstadt FC and TSG Hoffeinheim for attachment opportunities for Ghanaian coaches. This follows deep engagements between the Technical Director, Bernhard Lippert, and the three German clubs in the last few months. German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund today started the first leg of a historic five-day tour of the country with a coaching clinic at the Achimota School Park in Accra. The clinic which was the second event on Dortmund's schedule after their arrival on Wednesday, saw youth coaches and legends of the German club put the youngsters from Shooting Stars FC through their paces. The youngsters were taken through the basics of the sport including passing, shooting and dribbling drills by legends including Victor Ikpeba. The Black Stars of Ghana commenced their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on a bright note after earning a comfortable 3-0 win over Madagascar at the Cape Coast Stadium on Wednesday. Goals from Mohammed Kudus, youngster Felix Afena-Gyan and substitute Osman Bukari in the second half were enough to hand the Stars a deserved dominant victory at home. Kudus opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when he finished a low cross from Afena-Gyan. Three minutes later, the AS Roma forward recorded his debut international goal for Ghana with a flick after meeting a Gideon Mensah cross.
