Representatives from 174 countries are expected to convene in Ottawa in Canada, for the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) on plastic pollution. Scheduled from April 23 to 29, the meeting marks a significant step in the negotiation process, with only one more session expected to follow before finalizing negotiations later this year. Executive Secretary of the INC, Jyoti Mathur-Filipp, emphasized that both humanity and the environment are experiencing significant challenges due to plastic pollution, highlighting the critical importance of the negotiating session. “It is an opportunity to make significant progress for a robust agreement that would allow future generations to live in a world free of plastic pollution,” Jyoti said.  The nego...

Elon Musk’s Neuralink shows first brain-chip patient playing chess.

International, Science & Technology, World News
The first patient to receive a brain chip from Elon Musk's company Neuralink has appeared to play online chess. Neuralink released a nine-minute video in which the patient, who is paralysed below his shoulders, appears to move a cursor across a laptop screen with nothing but his thoughts. The video shows him playing chess and turning off the laptop's music. The patient, who had not been previously identified, said in the live stream video that his name is Noland Arbaugh, 29, who was paralyzed below the shoulder after a driving accident. Mr Arbaugh received an implant from the company in January and could control a computer mouse using his thoughts, Musk said last month. Musk previously said the aim of the brain chip is to eventually allow users with disabil...

New York Medical school eliminates tuition after $1bn gift

Education, World News
A New York City medical school will offer students free tuition following a $1bn donation from the 93-year-old widow of a major Wall Street investor. The gift to Albert Einstein College of Medicine came from Dr Ruth Gottesman, a former professor at the Bronx school. It is one of the largest ever donations made to a US school and is the largest ever made to a medical school. The Bronx, New York City's poorest borough, is ranked as the unhealthiest of New York's 62 counties. In a statement, university dean Dr Yaron Yomer said that the "transformational" gift "radically revolutionises our ability to continue attracting students who are committed to our mission, not just those who can afford it". Tuition at the school is nearly $59,000 each year, leaving students with substanti...

Russian opposition leader Navalny has died, prison service says

World News
Russia's most significant opposition leader for the past decade, Alexei Navalny, has died in prison inside the Arctic Circle, the prison service said. Seen as President Vladimir Putin's most vociferous critic, Navalny was serving a 19-year jail term on charges widely considered politically motivated. He was moved to an Arctic penal colony, considered one of the toughest jails, late last year. The prison service in the Yamalo-Nenets district said he had "felt unwell" after a walk on Friday. He had "almost immediately lost consciousness", it said in a statement, adding that an emergency medical team had immediately been called and tried to resuscitate him but without success. "The emergency doctors declared the prisoner dead. Cause of death is being established." Navalny's...

In Honour Of Our Kinsman Redeemer, Apostle Dr. Michael Ntumy

Ghana News, Pentecost News, World News
I was called into full-time ministry of The Church of Pentecost when Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy assumed the chairmanship position of the Church and was posted to Kete Krachi, his hometown. Each time he returned home, as the then District Overseer, I became his personal assistant, running errands for him and looking after his welfare. I am truly distraught to hear about the passing of my bosom kinsman, Apostle Dr. M. K. Ntumy. It is with a somber heart and a reflective mind that I remember the profound legacy he leaves behind. His life was a testament to the values of selflessness, humility, and kindness that he embodied every day. Dr. Ntumy was a close collaborator to all, though a chairman. His visits to Krachi were not merely official trips; they were homecomings filled wit...

Xi Jinping arrives in US as his Chinese Dream splutters

International, World News
When Xi Jinping stepped off his plane in San Francisco for the Apec summit, it was in circumstances very different to the last time he landed on American soil. Five years ago, when he was wined and dined by Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Mr Xi was in charge of a China still on the ascendancy. It had a buoyant economy outperforming forecasts. Its unemployment rate was among the lowest in years. While consolidating his power for a second term, Mr Xi proudly pointed to China's "flourishing" growth model as something other countries could emulate. By then, cracks were already appearing in what he calls his "Chinese Dream". They have only widened since then.ADVERTISEMENT One view is that because of this, Mr Xi is in a more vulnerable negotiating position this time, though expectations...

Few reasons for optimism after Antony Blinken’s diplomatic dash

International, World News
For three days, the US's top diplomat, Antony Blinken, has been dashing around the Middle East, trying to contain a situation that threatens to spin out of control. Israel on Friday. Jordan on Saturday. The West Bank, Iraq and Turkey on Sunday. Every stop posed its own challenges and gave reason to be pessimistic that much progress is being made. The central challenge facing the US secretary of state is that he is trying to find a middle ground where none, at the moment, exists. On Friday, Mr Blinken encouraged Israeli leaders to make temporary pauses in hostilities in order to ease humanitarian aid and encourage hostage releases - a move the Israeli prime minister quickly rejected.ADVERTISEMENT The next day, he met representatives of Israel's Arab neighbours. They all called ...

Our war is against Hamas for brutally attacking us – Israeli Ambassador to Ghana

Ghana News, Uncategorized, World News
The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Shlomit Sufa, has indicated that Israel's conflict is squarely with Hamas, a terrorist organisation in Gaza. Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express on Wednesday, she emphasised that Israel's fight is not with the Palestinian civilian population or Muslims. In her view, Israel's actions are aimed at countering a "terror entity" that is responsible for reigning violence and terror in their country. "Hamas is a terrorist organisation that is working on the parameters and the ideology of ISIS. Our war is not with the civilian population, our war is not with the Palestinians, our war is not against Muslims, and our war is against a terror entity that has brutally and savagely killed whomever they could find along the way on October 7,...
