Biden wants African Union to be added to Group of 20 nations

Africa News, International, World News
President Joe Biden plans to announce at next week’s US-Africa summit that his administration supports adding the African Union as a permanent member of the Group of 20 nations, according to the White House. The African Union represents the continent’s 54 countries. The G-20 is composed of the world’s major industrial and emerging economies and represents more than 80% of the world’s gross domestic product. South Africa is currently the only African member of the G-20. “It’s past time Africa has permanent seats at the table in international organizations and initiatives,” the senior director for African affairs on the National Security Council, Judd Devermont, said in a statement Friday. “We need more African voices in international conversations that concern the global econom...

World Cup 2022: African football governing body supports Fifa’s call for unity

Sports, World News
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has supported Fifa’s call for unity and inclusion ahead of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. The host nation has been criticised for its stance on same-sex relationships, its human rights record and its treatment of migrant workers. Earlier this month, world governing body Fifa wrote to competing nations asking them to “now focus on the football” instead of the competition’s controversial build-up. However, Sepp Blatter, who was Fifa president when Qatar was awarded the tournament in 2010, stoked matters by saying that awarding the tournament to the Gulf state was “a mistake”. With the first game of the finals on 20 November, Caf president Patrice Motsepe has now echoed the support given by Conmebol, the South...

Swap our debts for climate interventions – Akufo-Addo to rich countries

Ghana News, Headlines Today, World News
President Akufo-Addo has asked rich countries to allow heavily indebted poor African countries to swap their debts with climate interventions.  The President has been addressing the world at this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference, (COP27) in Egypt.  Ghana is currently facing a crippling economic crisis fueled by huge debt.  The debt situation is proving to be a major stumbling block to getting an IMF deal in time. Ghana is seeking a $3 billion bailout but the IMF has made it clear it will not lend to a country with unsustainable debt levels.  The IMF team has already worked with the finance ministry to complete a debt sustainability analysis. The IMF executive board is expected to base its fin...

‘The worst is yet to come’: IMF says 2023 will ‘feel like a recession’

International, World News
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted a tough 2023 as it cut growth predictions and forecast economic contraction in a third of the world. “The worst is yet to come,” the global financial institution’s World Economic Outlook report said. “For many people 2023 will feel like a recession,” it added. A downward revision of the global growth rate for 2023, from the amount the IMF said it expected in July, has been made in the report. Now, 2.7% growth is expected next year. It’s down from the 6% growth experienced last year and the 3.2% growth forecast for this year. This is the “weakest growth profile” since 2001, excluding the acute phase of COVID-19 pandemic and the global financial crisis, the IMF said. It reflects “significant slowdowns” for ...

Pakistan floods: ‘It’s like fighting a war with no end’

International, World News
More than 2,000 hospitals and health centres were damaged or destroyed in recent floods in Pakistan – and families and their children are battling malnutrition and infection in what’s now a public health emergency. Doctors like Ammara Gohar are on the front lines of the crisis as the UN launches a fresh appeal for the world to send more aid. “It’s very difficult for us. We attended to patients during Covid, but this is tougher because it involves environmental hazards,” says Dr Ammara, a gynaecologist four years into her medical career. She is working out of a school in rural Sindh province, the area worst affected in the floods, which has temporarily become the headquarters for the district health office after it was submerged. Here, Dr Ammara and her team load a van with box...

Indonesia: At least 174 dead in football stadium crush

International, Sports, World News
At least 174 people have died in a crush at an Indonesian football match that has become one of the world’s worst stadium disasters. About 180 were also hurt in aftermath of home team Arema FC’s loss to bitter rivals at the overcrowded stadium late on Saturday in Malang, East Java. The crush took place after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch. As panic spread, thousands surged towards Kanjuruhan stadium’s exits, where many suffocated. Fifa, the world’s governing football body, states that no “crowd control gas” should be carried or used by stewards or police at matches. One eyewitness told the BBC that police had fired numerous tear gas rounds “continuously and fast” after the situation with fans became “tense”. Fifa President Gianni Infantino said it was...
