Xi Jinping arrives in US as his Chinese Dream splutters

International, World News
When Xi Jinping stepped off his plane in San Francisco for the Apec summit, it was in circumstances very different to the last time he landed on American soil. Five years ago, when he was wined and dined by Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Mr Xi was in charge of a China still on the ascendancy. It had a buoyant economy outperforming forecasts. Its unemployment rate was among the lowest in years. While consolidating his power for a second term, Mr Xi proudly pointed to China's "flourishing" growth model as something other countries could emulate. By then, cracks were already appearing in what he calls his "Chinese Dream". They have only widened since then.ADVERTISEMENT One view is that because of this, Mr Xi is in a more vulnerable negotiating position this time, though expectations ...

Few reasons for optimism after Antony Blinken’s diplomatic dash

International, World News
For three days, the US's top diplomat, Antony Blinken, has been dashing around the Middle East, trying to contain a situation that threatens to spin out of control. Israel on Friday. Jordan on Saturday. The West Bank, Iraq and Turkey on Sunday. Every stop posed its own challenges and gave reason to be pessimistic that much progress is being made. The central challenge facing the US secretary of state is that he is trying to find a middle ground where none, at the moment, exists. On Friday, Mr Blinken encouraged Israeli leaders to make temporary pauses in hostilities in order to ease humanitarian aid and encourage hostage releases - a move the Israeli prime minister quickly rejected.ADVERTISEMENT The next day, he met representatives of Israel's Arab neighbours. They all called f...

Our war is against Hamas for brutally attacking us – Israeli Ambassador to Ghana

Ghana News, World News
The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Shlomit Sufa, has indicated that Israel's conflict is squarely with Hamas, a terrorist organisation in Gaza. Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express on Wednesday, she emphasised that Israel's fight is not with the Palestinian civilian population or Muslims. In her view, Israel's actions are aimed at countering a "terror entity" that is responsible for reigning violence and terror in their country. "Hamas is a terrorist organisation that is working on the parameters and the ideology of ISIS. Our war is not with the civilian population, our war is not with the Palestinians, our war is not against Muslims, and our war is against a terror entity that has brutally and savagely killed whomever they could find along the way on October 7,"...

Atlantic Lifesciences and Vins Bioproducts sign MoU to produce anti-snake venom in Ghana

Ghana News, World News
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Atlantic Lifesciences, a Ghanaian company, and Vins Bioproducts, an Indian firm to produce anti-snake venom locally, to save the lives of people who are bitten by snakes, sometimes leading to deaths due to the lack of life-saving vaccines. The signing of the agreement for Vins Bioproducts to supply bulk quantities of anti-snake venom for the commencement of the fill and finish production of the serum in Ghana, will reduce the burden on government to continuously import the product into the country. This Anti-snake venom once produced by Atlantic Lifesciences will have the ability to neutralise the effect of venoms from over 19 different species of snakes. Due to its polyvalent nature, they are ideal for cases where th...
Israel’s borders explained in maps

Israel’s borders explained in maps

International, World News
More than 75 years after Israel declared statehood, its borders are yet to be entirely settled. Wars, treaties and occupation mean the shape of the Jewish state has changed over time, and in parts is still undefined. Here is a series of maps explaining why. The land which would become Israel was for centuries part of the Turkish-ruled Ottoman Empire. After World War One and the collapse of the empire, territory known as Palestine - the portion of which west of the River Jordan was also known as the land of Israel by Jews - was marked out and assigned to Britain to administer by the victorious allied powers (soon after endorsed by the League of Nations). The terms of the mandate entrusted Britain with establishing in Palestine "a national home for the Jewish people", so long as do...

Fossils of ‘alien’ corpses displayed in Mexico’s Congress as UFO expert testifies

The fossilised bodies presented in glass cases by journalist and UFO scientist Jaime Maussan at Mexico’s parliament are said to be 1,000 years old. The bodies of two alleged “alien” beings were exhibited before politicians in a special session of the Mexican Congress. The fossilised bodies, presented by journalist and UFO scientist Jaime Maussan and displayed in glass cases, were retrieved from Cusco in Peru and are said to be 1,000 years old. “These specimens are not part of the evolution of our world. They were not recovered from a UFO scrap. They were found fossilised in a diatom moss mine,” Maussan said, testifying under oath. The session in the Mexican Congress comes weeks after another in front of the US Congress, but this appearance was much more sensational in its conte...
France halts iPhone 12 sales over radiation levels

France halts iPhone 12 sales over radiation levels

Science & Technology, World News
France has ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 for emitting too much electromagnetic radiation. On Tuesday, the French watchdog which governs radio frequencies also told the tech giant to fix existing phones. The ANFR has advised Apple that if it cannot resolve the issue via a software update, it must recall every iPhone 12 ever sold in the country. But the World Health Organization has previously sought to allay fears about radiation emitted by mobile phones. It says on its website there is no evidence to conclude that exposure to low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to humans. The iPhone 12 was first released in September 2020, and it is still sold worldwide. Apple told the BBC it was contesting the ANFR’s review, and said it had provided the regulator wi...
