After 12 years of questions, criticisms and conjecture, the Fifa World Cup in Qatar will finally get under way on Sunday. The build-up to the first tournament to be held in a Muslim country in the Middle East has been overshadowed by a number of controversies. But Fifa has asked all 32 competing nations to “focus on the football” and hosts Qatar will kick off the tournament against Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium (16:00 GMT). The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has supported Fifa’s call for unity and inclusion ahead of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. The host nation has been criticised for its stance on same-sex relationships, its human rights record and its treatment of migrant workers. FIFA records close to 3 million ticket sales in less than 33 days to World Cup kick off

The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has recorded a total of 2.89 million ticket sales in less than 33 days to the 2022 World Cup tournament in Qatar.  According to the world football body, the 2.89 million tickets sold so far were for the 64 matches to be staged in eight different stadia in Qatar.  It said, out of the tickets sold, the highest countries to have purchased the most were United States of America, Saudi Arabia, England, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, France, Brazil and Germany. “The tournament has also achieved record-breaking hospitality ticket sales with 240,000 packages sold 63% of those to international clients,” it further detailed.  The football body aside other preparations made, had also introduc...

CAF re-opens bids for AFCON 2025

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has re-opened bids for the hosting rights of AFCON 2025 after they were taken away from original host Guinea. The CAF Executive Committee met on Saturday 1 October 2022 in Algiers, Algeria where the announcement was made. Guinea were stripped of the competition following a meeting on Friday in Conakry between Guinea’s interim president, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, and the president of African football’s governing body, Patrice Motsepe, to discuss the withdrawal after the west African country, among the poorest of the continent, said it was not ready to host the 24-nation tournament. Indonesia: At least 174 dead in football stadium crush

At least 174 people have died in a crush at an Indonesian football match that has become one of the world’s worst stadium disasters. About 180 were also hurt in aftermath of home team Arema FC’s loss to bitter rivals at the overcrowded stadium late on Saturday in Malang, East Java. The crush took place after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch. As panic spread, thousands surged towards Kanjuruhan stadium’s exits, where many suffocated.
