Facebook and Instagram to restrict news access in Canada

Facebook and Instagram to restrict news access in Canada

International, Science & Technology
Meta has said it will begin to restrict news on its platforms to Canadian consumers after parliament passed a controversial online news bill. The bill forces big platforms to compensate news publishers for content posted on their sites. Meta and Google have both already been testing limiting access to news to some Canadians. In 2021, Australian users were blocked from sharing or viewing news on Facebook in response to a similar law. Canada’s Online News Act, which cleared the senate on Thursday, lays out rules requiring platforms like Meta and Google to negotiate commercial deals and pay news organisations for their content. Meta has called the law “fundamentally flawed legislation that ignores the realities of how our platforms work”. On Thursday, it said news availabili...

Missing Titanic sub: Canada sends navy ship with hyperbaric chamber

International, Science & Technology, World News
The search mission continues to expand, with Canada’s Department of National Defence saying a number of vessels are on the way. A Royal Canadian Navy ship equipped with a six-person mobile hyperbaric recompression chamber is en route. If the sub is located, the recompression chambers on board this ship can be used to treat or prevent decompression sickness. When divers are exposed to rapid decreases in pressure, nitrogen forms bubbles in tissue and blood. The ship, called the HMCS Glace Bay, is also carrying a medical team specialising in dive medicine. A Canadian Coast Guard Ship, the Terry Fox, is already at the scene, and will soon be joined by two others, the Ann Harvey and the John Cabot. What is AI, is it dangerous and what jobs are at risk?

Science & Technology, World News
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is developing at high speed and is transforming many aspects of modern life. However, some experts fear that it could be used for malicious purposes, and may threaten jobs. What is AI and how does it work? AI allows a computer to think, act, and respond almost as if it was a human. Computers can be fed huge amounts of information and trained to identify the patterns in it, in order to make predictions, solve problems, and even learn from their own mistakes. As well as data, AI relies on algorithms – lists of rules which must be followed in the correct order to complete a task. The technology is behind the voice-controlled virtual assistants Siri and Alexa. It lets Spotify, YouTube and BBC iPlayer suggest what you might want to play ...

Invest in AI in key sectors; make budgetary allocations – Governments urged

International, Science & Technology
The Scientific Director of the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL), Prof. Jerry John Kponyo is asking governments for investment in AI in key sectors of the economy. Speaking at the maiden AfricaAI conference in Kigali, Rwanda, Prof. Kponyo noted it is crucial for economic transformation. The lab seeks to develop talent in Data Science and Machine Learning to help bridge the widening skills gap needed to champion the Digital Economic Transformation agenda of Ghana and the Subregion. Prof. Kponyo, however, thinks funds internally generated from investments will make the gains sustainable. “What exte...

Artificial Intelligence shouldn’t widen gender gap – Expert warns

International, Science & Technology
According to the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), women farmers in Ghana constitute nearly half of the country’s crop producers. However, they battle with a myriad of challenges including a lack of land ownership and limited access to finance, inputs and markets and a lack of political voice as compared to their male counterparts. With the accelerated use of Artificial Intelligence in agriculture, the Gender and Inclusivity officer of the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (RAIL-KNUST), Dr. Rita Udor anticipates a worsening situation. She is therefore warning of female exclusion with the use of Artificial Intelligence in the agriculture sector. “As we think of AI in the agric sector, I...
