Mark Zuckerberg reveals new WhatsApp privacy features

International, Science & Technology
Meta has announced new privacy features for WhatsApp users. Users will be able to leave group chats silently, control who can see their online status and block screenshots on View Once messages. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said this would help keep WhatsApp messaging “as private and secure as face-to-face conversations”. It will begin rolling out the features this month, highlighting them in a global campaign, starting in the UK. Leave silently The popular messaging app currently alerts all members of a group chat to someone leaving or being removed by default. And while there are ways to disable this for individual group chats, the option to leave silently is not presented to users when they choose to “exit group” – sometimes causing awkwardness, embarrassment ...

Online impersonation a major threat – Cyber Security Authority

International, Science & Technology
The Cyber Security Authority (CA) has disclosed that there was a surge in online impersonation in June, 2022. The Authority explained that after its active intelligence on social media in the month of June, it found out that the fake profiles of government appointees and other persons of influence are being used to sway online users to make fraudulent investments or to pay fees for non-existing contracts. “The Cyber Security Authority has conducted active threat intelligence on social media and found online impersonation as a major threat in the month of June 2022. Online impersonation assumes a significant portion of fraudulent online activities. “The unrestricted nature of social media account registration process grants all users the ability to assume any identity. This has em...

Israeli Green Innovation Competition winners share experiences

International, Science & Technology
The 2020 and 2021 winners of the Israeli Green Innovation Competition (IGIC) have stated that the youth in Ghana have the solution to what can propel the country forward. They have, accordingly, urged the youth not to sit on the various innovative ideas they have, but rather initiate them so they would get the needed help from people. The winners, Jeffrey Boakye Appiagyei and Deladem Kojo Xonu, gave the advice at a media briefing organised for them in Accra on July 21 by Strategic Communications Africa Limited (Stratcomm Africa). CompetitionInstituted in 2019 by the Israeli Embassy in Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement, which is a Stratcomm Africa initiative, the IGIC seeks to honour individuals and organisations that come up with innovative solution...

Policy to create child-friendly internet in the offing

Ghana News, Science & Technology
More than a third of Ghanaian young people between 12-17 years have access to the internet, mostly using mobile phones. However, the greater use of the internet increasingly exposes children and young people to the dangers of all forms of abuse. A recent UNICEF Ghana report showed that many children had indicated that they have been treated in a hurtful way by someone else when using the internet.Boys, older children and those living in urban areas report upsetting incidents more often. Sexual content, hurtful comments, fraud or violence are among the things that children find upsetting. In many of these cases, parents are not even aware of the incidents. National Child Online Protection To overcome the bottlenecks and provide child-friendly internet, the government is desi...
Twitter sees first win in case against Elon Musk

Twitter sees first win in case against Elon Musk

International, Science & Technology
A Delaware judge agreed to fast-track the case with an October trial date instead of February that Musk wanted. Twitter Inc. scored an early win against Elon Musk in its fight to make him complete his $44 billion buyout, as a Delaware judge agreed to fast-track the case with an October trial date. Chancery Court Chief Judge Kathaleen St. J. McCormick on Tuesday scheduled the trial for five days in the fall, instead of two weeks in February as the billionaire requested. Twitter argued it was suffering under the Tesla Inc. founder’s withdrawal from the deal and disparagement of the social media company. The ruling marks the first victory for Twitter in a case in which many legal experts say Musk will be the underdog. In a hearing in Wilmington, the judge made clear she saw littl...
Do single-use plastic bans work?

Do single-use plastic bans work?

Science & Technology
The problems caused by plastic waste are rapidly increasing around the globe, but it still serves a useful purpose in food packaging. Can plastic still be a green option? In many countries, plastic straws are increasingly hard to come by. In the UK, where I live, they were banned completely at the end of 2020 along with plastic coffee stirrers. So when I am offered a straw in a restaurant or café now, it's usually made of paper. But these paper straws bend and go limp after a few minutes in my drink, and in the end they all go in the general waste, either to an incinerator to be burned to produce energy, or to landfill. Do I really want a paper straw? I am lucky enough to be able to lift that glass to my lips, so I might as well do so. And just like that, a step towards zero wast...
Can we fix our ocean noise problem?

Can we fix our ocean noise problem?

Science & Technology
Researchers are uncovering just how large the impact of man-made noise is on ocean life. But there are some surprisingly simple ways we could tackle this overlooked pollution problem. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, a great lull fell over North America, above and below the water. Understandably, fewer people were traveling by air. But ship traffic was also significantly reduced, even as far north as the Bay of Fundy in Canada. As a result, underwater noise in the bay dropped by an incredible six decibels to below 150 Hz – equivalent to a soft rain or cat's purr. The area is frequented by North Atlantic right whales, so scientists at Duke University decided to see if the quieter waters had any impact on the giant mammals. Sure enough, ...

James Webb: Nasa space telescope delivers spectacular pictures

Science & Technology
Stunning images of a "stellar nursery" and a "cosmic dance" have been acquired by Nasa's new $10bn space telescope. The two pictures, and others, were presented to the world on Tuesday to mark the James Webb observatory's readiness to begin science operations. The facility has spent the past six months since launch undergoing testing. Viewed as the successor to the famous Hubble telescope, Webb is expected to be a dominant force for discovery for at least the next 20 years. As it happened: How the first images were unveiled The new observatory is a joint project of the US, European and Canadian space agencies - with Nasa in the lead. Webb has been specially tuned to see the sky in the infrared - that's light at longer wavelengths than can be sensed by our eyes. Th...
