Africa News, International, Science & Technology
Vodafone plans to work with Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation Project Kuiper to extend the reach of its 4G and 5G telecoms networks in Europe and Africa. The British mobile operator said Project Kuiper’s high-bandwidth, low-latency satellites would be used to connect mobile base stations in remote locations to its core networks, eliminating the need for fibre-based or fixed wireless links. Amazon is preparing to test two prototype satellites in the coming months before starting to deploy production satellites in 2024 for its network, which will compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink, OneWeb and others. Google tests watermark to identify AI images

Google tests watermark to identify AI images

International, Science & Technology
Google is trialling a digital watermark to spot images made by artificial intelligence (AI) in a bid to fight disinformation. Developed by DeepMind, Google’s AI arm, SynthID will identify images generated by machines. It works by embedding changes to individual pixels in images so watermarks are invisible to the human eye but detectable by computers. But DeepMind said it is not “foolproof against extreme image manipulation”. As the technology evolves, it is becoming increasingly more complex to tell the difference between real images and artificially-generated ones – as BBC Bitesize’s AI or Real quiz shows. AI image generators have become mainstream, with the popular tool Midjourney boasting more than 14.5m users. They allow people to create images in seconds b...

Former employees of Twitter Africa who were laid off as part of a global cost-cutting measure after Elon Musk’s acquisition have not received any severance pay more than seven months since leaving the company, several sources told CNN. In late May, the former employees, who were based in the Ghanaian capital Accra, accepted Twitter’s (TWTR) offer to pay them three months worth of severance, the cost of repatriating foreign staff and legal expenses incurred during negotiations with the company. But they have not received the money or any further communication, the sources said. “They literally ghosted us,” one former Twitter Africa employee told CNN. “Although Twitter has eventually settled former staff in other locations, Africa staff have still been left in the lurc...

NCA introduces technology neutrality to address Significant Market Power

Ghana News, Science & Technology
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has taken a significant step towards correcting market imbalances and boosting consumer choice in the telecommunications sector with the introduction of technology neutrality for non-SMP operators.  According to the Authority, “This initiative will grant Vodafone and AT the authorisation to re-farm their spectrum assignment in the 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 2100MHz bands to provide 4G services, subject to paying an annual premium.”  Technology neutrality is one of the remedial actions to address Significant Market Power (SMP) concerns. The benefits of Technology Neutrality include the opportunity for operators who do not currently have 4G services to deploy it within their current spectrum assignment, levelling the playing field and...

Google’s ChatGPT rival Bard launches in Europe and Brazil

International, Science & Technology
Google’s parent company Alphabet is rolling out its artificial intelligence chatbot Bard in Europe and Brazil. It is the product’s biggest expansion since its March launch in the US and the UK and heats up the rivalry with Microsoft’s ChatGPT. Both are examples of generative AI that can respond to questions in a human-like way. Bard’s launch in the EU had been held up after the main data regulator in the bloc raised privacy concerns. The Irish Data Protection Commission said that the tech giant had not provided enough information about how its generative AI tool protects Europeans’ privacy to justify an EU launch. The company said it has since met the watchdogs to reassure them on issues relating to transparency, choice and control. In a briefing with journalists, Amar S...

Reviving Ghanaian Languages: Harnessing the Power of AI for Preservation

Ghana News, Headlines Today, Science & Technology
Languages are an integral part of a nation’s cultural identity and heritage. They reflect the unique experiences, values, and traditions of a community. However, Ghana, like many other countries, is facing a significant threat to its linguistic diversity. The rise of globalization, urbanization, and the dominance of major world languages has put Ghanaian languages at risk of extinction. Fortunately, emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), offer a glimmer of hope for the preservation and revitalization of these endangered languages. There are at least 201 African languages that have gone extinct due to globalization and 10 of them are Ghanaian. As the world becomes more interconnected, people are increasingly using common languages like English and French...
