‘The worst is yet to come’: IMF says 2023 will ‘feel like a recession’

International, World News
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted a tough 2023 as it cut growth predictions and forecast economic contraction in a third of the world. “The worst is yet to come,” the global financial institution’s World Economic Outlook report said. “For many people 2023 will feel like a recession,” it added. A downward revision of the global growth rate for 2023, from the amount the IMF said it expected in July, has been made in the report. Now, 2.7% growth is expected next year. It’s down from the 6% growth experienced last year and the 3.2% growth forecast for this year. This is the “weakest growth profile” since 2001, excluding the acute phase of COVID-19 pandemic and the global financial crisis, the IMF said. It reflects “significant slowdowns” for t...

Pakistan floods: ‘It’s like fighting a war with no end’

International, World News
More than 2,000 hospitals and health centres were damaged or destroyed in recent floods in Pakistan – and families and their children are battling malnutrition and infection in what’s now a public health emergency. Doctors like Ammara Gohar are on the front lines of the crisis as the UN launches a fresh appeal for the world to send more aid. “It’s very difficult for us. We attended to patients during Covid, but this is tougher because it involves environmental hazards,” says Dr Ammara, a gynaecologist four years into her medical career. She is working out of a school in rural Sindh province, the area worst affected in the floods, which has temporarily become the headquarters for the district health office after it was submerged. Here, Dr Ammara and her team load a van with boxe...

Indonesia: At least 174 dead in football stadium crush

International, Sports, World News
At least 174 people have died in a crush at an Indonesian football match that has become one of the world’s worst stadium disasters. About 180 were also hurt in aftermath of home team Arema FC’s loss to bitter rivals at the overcrowded stadium late on Saturday in Malang, East Java. The crush took place after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch. As panic spread, thousands surged towards Kanjuruhan stadium’s exits, where many suffocated. Fifa, the world’s governing football body, states that no “crowd control gas” should be carried or used by stewards or police at matches. One eyewitness told the BBC that police had fired numerous tear gas rounds “continuously and fast” after the situation with fans became “tense”. Fifa President Gianni Infantino said it was ...

Charles is the new King of the United Kingdom

International, World News
At the moment the Queen died, the throne passed immediately and without ceremony to the heir, Charles, the former Prince of Wales. But there are a number of practical – and traditional – steps which he must go through to be crowned King. © NADAV KANDER What will he be called? One of his first acts is to decide whether to reign as King Charles III, or take another name. For instance, his grandfather George VI’s first name was Albert, but he reigned using one of his middle names. Charles could choose from any of his four names – Charles Philip Arthur George.
