NSMQ mistress Elsie Kaufmann launches foundation to promote STEM

The National Science and Maths Quiz mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann has launched a not-for-profit foundation to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Ghana. The foundation, Elsie Effah Kaufmann Foundation (EEKF), seeks to help bridge the current deficit in STEM related programmes in Ghana by providing the necessary tools needed for a thorough and practical study of the subjects. The EEKF would also provide training for science teachers to better equip them for the teaching of the subject in a way that would inspire the students to further in STEM courses. The Ghana Police Service has expressed reservations about the report on corruption perception survey conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). A research conducted by the GSS together with CHRAJ and UNODC ranked the Ghana Police Service as the most corrupt institution in the country. According to the survey, more than 17.4 million bribes were paid in 2021 with Police officers topping the list of officials who take bribes with 53.2%. The Ghana Police Service and the Office of the President are perceived as the country’s most corrupt institutions. This is the outcome of an Afrobarometer study undertaken by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana). The research found that the Police’s score of 65% placed it at the top of the chain while the Presidency followed in second position with 55%. The report also placed members of Parliament as the third group of people in the pack with a score of 54%. Per the assessment, positive ratings of the President’s performance declined by 31 percentage points between 2019 and 2022, from 61% to 30%. Armed Forces, religious leaders most trusted institutions – Afrobarometer

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and religious leaders have been ranked as the most trusted institutions in the country in the year 2022. This ranking was contained in the latest Afrobarometer study conducted by the Centre for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD-Ghana) which bordered on democratic governance, trust in institutions and corruption. The CDD-Ghana survey revealed that the Ghana Armed Forces topped the chart with a total score of 67 percent. Followed by religious leaders with 49 percent. According to the report, traditional leaders are the third most trusted public institution with a percentage of 27. The Nigerian government has shut down one of its colleges in the capital, Abuja, over fears of attack by armed gangs. In a statement on Monday, the education ministry said the closure of the Federal Government College in the city’s suburb of Kwali became necessary over insecurity in nearby villages. It said a security breach in Sheda and Lambata villages threatened the school – after gunmen attacked Sheda on Sunday morning, kidnapping a resident. The national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms have returned to the country after winning a total of 45 medals to finish third at the 11th Africa Armwrestling Championships which ended last Friday (July 22, 2022) in Lagos. The Ghanaian team comprised 21 pullers (as armwrestling athletes are known) claimed 18 gold medals, 22 silver and five bronze medals to finish behind hosts Nigeria (27 gold medals) and Egypt (24 gold medals).Each of the pullers - 10 males and 11 females - won at least two medals each during the Championship. The Ghana Police Service is the most corrupt institution in the country, a research conducted by Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) together with other stakeholders has stated. In total, 24 institutions were sampled for the said survey.  The research was christened; Corruption in Ghana, Peoples Experiences and View. The survey aimed to unearth corrupt institutions and provide data that will guide the formulation of policies in arresting the menace.  According to the survey, more than 17.4 million bribes were paid in 2021 with police officers topping the list of officials who take bribes at 53.2%.
