Stunning images of a "stellar nursery" and a "cosmic dance" have been acquired by Nasa's new $10bn space telescope. The two pictures, and others, were presented to the world on Tuesday to mark the James Webb observatory's readiness to begin science operations. The facility has spent the past six months since launch undergoing testing. Viewed as the successor to the famous Hubble telescope, Webb is expected to be a dominant force for discovery for at least the next 20 years. As it happened: How the first images were unveiled The new observatory is a joint project of the US, European and Canadian space agencies - with Nasa in the lead. Twitter sues Elon Musk over $44bn takeover deal

Twitter is suing billionaire Elon Musk to try to force him to buy the social media firm, setting up a legal battle with the world's richest man. It comes after Mr Musk announced he was walking away from his proposed $44bn (£37bn) takeover of Twitter on Friday. He claimed Twitter had not given information about the number of fake and spam accounts on the platform. Now Twitter has asked a Delaware court to order Mr Musk to complete the merger at the agreed $54.20 per Twitter share. "Having mounted a public spectacle to put Twitter in play, and having proposed and then signed a seller-friendly merger agreement, [Mr] Musk apparently believes that he - unlike every other party subject to Delaware contract law - is free to change his mind, trash the company, disrupt its ope...

Aristotle’s 2000-year-old advice on friendships

Aristotle’s 2000-year-old advice on friendships

Lifestyle & Social
“In poverty as well as in other misfortunes, people suppose that friends are their only refuge. And friendship is a help to the young, in saving them from error, just as it is also to the old, with a view to the care they require and their diminished capacity for action stemming from their weakness; it is a help also to those in their prime in performing noble actions, for ‘two going together’ are better able to think and to act.”—Aristotle. A few months ago, together with a group of friends, we talked about the value of friendships. Though it escalated into a two-hour argument with lots of differing views, it was a positive discussion that left me with much contemplation. On one side of the argument, the rationalists argued that all friendships and relationships were transactional, ...

Forgotten: Woes of people with mental illness

Ghana News, Health & Wellbeing
People suffering from mental disorders are often stigmatised in Ghana and globally. Even with the enactment of the Mental Health Act 846 of 2012, there seems to be no end in sight to address the challenges that these people go through. Often, those suffering from the condition, as well as those related to them or even mental health professionals who attend to them, are stigmatised because of their association with the mentally ill person. In Ghana, the Mental Health Authority (MHA) estimated that 3.1 million people were living with one form of mental disorder, accounting for 10 per cent of the general population and 16,000 people experiencing severe mental health disorders as of 2021. Free but not free Section 88 (1) of the Mental Health, 2012 (Act 846) of 2012 stipulates that ...

The population is expected to remain at that level until 2100. Fertility, the report declares, has fallen markedly in recent decades for many countries: today, two-thirds of the global population lives in a country or area where lifetime fertility is below 2.1 births per woman, roughly the level r...

A/R: WORKERS AT SUAME MAGAZINE CALLS OUT GOV’T TO COMMISSION ABANDONED HOSPITAL

Ghana News, Health & Wellbeing
Workers at the Suame Magazine industrial area have called on government to commission an abandoned hospital facility that was established two years ago at the site. The fully completed facility which was going to meet the medical needs of the artisans and residents in surrounding areas has been left disused awaiting commissioning by government. Some workers on site, lamented that several attempts to commission the building have failed as stakeholders constantly call the ceremony off without a statement. The abandoned facility has been left at the mercy of some unscrupulous folks who are gradually turning the facility into a dumping site. Some of the artisans at the site have taken over the frontage of the facility to ply their auto servicing trade. From a top view, the buil...

Following the announcement from the Ghana FA, there have been mixed feelings among Ghanaians with some claiming their decision to play for the Black Stars is solely based on the team securing qualification to play at the World Cup. However, Addo has played down such claims, adding that their decision goes beyond the global showpiece. “It’s a tough decision and they know what they are getting into. ...
