Sanitation Minister blames Akosombo Dam flood victims for not heeding warnings to evacuate

Ghana News
The Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Freda Prempeh has blamed victims of the floods induced by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam for not heeding early warnings by the Volta River Authority and other state agencies to evacuate. The Minister said the victims refused to relocate until the unfortunate incident happened, making them a burden to the government. According to her, the government now has to spend limited resources to ensure relief items are provided for them. “We don’t want what has happened in Akosombo to happen to us in Accra. The Akosombo spillage, even though VRA, NADMO, and the Water Resource Commission came together to educate the people in the community, did a simulation exercise at Mepe, yet they refused to leave, they didn’t want to be evacuated, they staye...

Collapse Cocobod; allow farmers to sell directly to buyers – President of Cocoa farmers Assoc.

Ghana News
The President of the Concerned Cocoa Farmers Association, Nana Boateng Bonsu, has called for the dissolution of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). According to him, the time is ripe for cocoa farmers to sell their produce directly to buyers since Cocobod has failed in its duties in the interest of Ghanaian cocoa farmers. Mr Bonsu in an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday indicated that the government-controlled institution that fixes the buying price for cocoa in the country is inefficient, thus, farmers should be set free. “If they know Cocobod has collapsed, we should know so that cocoa farmers can sell their products directly to the buyer to make our money rather than relying on the government because the government has nothing better to offer the farmers,” he sa...

Education, International, Science & Technology
The world is on an "unstoppable" shift towards renewable energy but the phase down of fossil fuels is not happening quickly enough, a new report says. The International Energy Agency, the global energy watchdog, predicted renewables would provide half of the world's electricity by 2030. But it warned that emissions were still too high to prevent temperatures rising above a key threshold of 1.5C. And the report said investment in fossil fuels needed to be cut in half. What is net zero and how are the UK and other countries doing?Record surge in days over key 1.5C warming limit The Paris-based energy agency's report, released on Tuesday, was not all doom and gloom. It praised the significant progress countries had made in expanding renewable energy and supporting consumers wit...

It comes as the firm started charging new users $1 in New Zealand and the Philippines for accessing the platform. Mr Musk did not provide more details on the plans. New users who opt out of subscribing will only be able to take "read only" actions, such as reading posts, watching videos, and following accounts, the company said in its website. Microsoft’s new AI assistant can go to meetings for you

International, Science & Technology
A ChatGPT-style AI assistant, developed by Microsoft and embedded into its office apps, will become available to all from 1 November, following trials. Microsoft 365 Copilot can summarise meetings held in Teams for anyone who chooses not to attend. It can also draft emails, create word documents, spreadsheet graphs, and Powerpoint presentations in moments. Microsoft says it hopes the tool will eliminate "drudgery" but some worry tech like this will replace workers. There are also concerns it could leave businesses dangerously reliant on AI-powered assistance. What is AI and is it dangerous? In its current form, it could also fall foul of new rules governing AI, for failing to make clear when content has not been made by humans. Both Europe's AI act and China's AI regul...

Nokia to axe up to 14,000 jobs to cut costs

International, Science & Technology
Finnish telecoms giant Nokia is to axe between 9,000 and 14,000 jobs by the end of 2026 to cut costs. The announcement was made as the company reported a 20% drop in sales between July and September. The company blamed slowing demand for 5G equipment in markets such as North America. It currently has 86,000 employees around the world, and has axed thousands of jobs since 2015. Nokia wants to cut costs by between €800m and €1.2bn (£695m-£1bn) by 2026, it said. Advances in cloud computing and AI will need "significant investments in networks that have vastly improved capabilities", said chief executive Pekka Lundmark. "However, given the uncertain timing of the market recovery, we are now taking decisive action," he said. It said it wanted to "act quickly" by cutting cos...

On October 12, 2023, the prominent clergymen - Archbishop Duncan-Williams, founder of the United Denominations of Action Chapel Churches Worldwide, and Rev.
