A soldier with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has died of Monkeypox in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Health Directorate has said. He was admitted at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital and passed on three days later. He was admitted at the hospital on July 23, 2022 with symptoms of the disease but died on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 while receiving treatment. First case in Upper East Confirming the incident to the media at the weekend, the Upper East Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi, said it was the first case to be recorded in the region. The monkeypox outbreak has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization. The classification is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a worldwide upsurge in cases. It came at the end of the second meeting of the WHO's emergency committee on the virus. More than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries, said WHO director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. There had been five deaths so far as a result of the outbreak, he added. Five cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the Eastern, Western and Greater Accra regions, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) says.
