Low Uptake Of Flood Insurance Leaves Homes Exposed – Sunu Assurance CEO

As heavy rains wreak havoc across Accra and other parts of Ghana, the Executive Director- Finance and Admin. of Sunu Assurance, Mr Gideon Sosu, is sounding the alarm on the country’s low adoption of property and flood insurance, which continues to leave homes and businesses vulnerable to financial ruin.  In an interview with Pent News following the recent floods, Mr Sosu lamented that many affected properties could have been protected had their owners secured even basic insurance coverage.  ‘In developed countries like the UK and the US, these protections are often embedded in rent. A downpour in parts of Accra on Monday morning, May 6, left in its wake the usual flooding on some streets in the capital. The rain, accompanied by strong winds, brought down two billboards on the Korle Bu road. One of the billboards mounted at the Korle Bu Traffic Light intersection fell on the part of the road from the Bukom Boxing Arena towards the Lavender Hill at Korle Bu. Another billboard also fell on the same stretch. At the time of filling this report, Police officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department were at the scene to clear the road to aid the movement of vehicles. Barely an hour after a couple of earth tremors hit some parts of the Greater Accra Region, some social media users have taken to their timelines to share their experience. Trending at number two on Twitter, some tweethearts are still in shock while others sought to confirm if what they felt wasn’t peculiar to them. The tremors are said to have occurred around 10:00 am and 11:53 am respectively at an estimated magnitude 4.0, 10 km from Gbawe. The Accra-Tema passenger train service will resume full operations next week after it was suspended for nearly two years, the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) has said. The Company said it had initially planned to resume operations earlier this week after series of successful test runs, but had to reschedule to next week after another test run on Tuesday, March 08, 2022. “We have conducted series of successful test run. A group calling itself the ‘Aggrieved Public Sector Workers’ will stage a demonstration in Accra today, Wednesday, August 18, 2021. The group is embarking on the protest against the 4% salary increment the government has proposed for public sector workers, as well as what it calls poor working conditions and general high cost of living.
