‘The worst is yet to come’: IMF says 2023 will ‘feel like a recession’

International, World News
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted a tough 2023 as it cut growth predictions and forecast economic contraction in a third of the world. “The worst is yet to come,” the global financial institution’s World Economic Outlook report said. “For many people 2023 will feel like a recession,” it added. A downward revision of the global growth rate for 2023, from the amount the IMF said it expected in July, has been made in the report. Now, 2.7% growth is expected next year. It’s down from the 6% growth experienced last year and the 3.2% growth forecast for this year. This is the “weakest growth profile” since 2001, excluding the acute phase of COVID-19 pandemic and the global financial crisis, the IMF said. It reflects “significant slowdowns” for ...

More than 500 dead in Nigeria floods – Authorities

Africa News
The authorities in Nigeria say the number of people killed by floods ravaging the country in recent weeks has risen to more than 500. More than 1,500 others have been wounded while 1.4 million are displaced. Since the end of July, the West African country has been grappling with a wave of flooding affecting 31 of its 36 states including the capital Abuja. The floods are caused by heavy rains and release of excess waters from dams within Nigeria and a major dam in neighbouring Cameroon by the authorities. Experts also partly blame the flooding on the impact of climate change. The country is hit by floods every year. But this year’s disaster is the worst in more than a decade. Giving an update on the situation at a press conference on Tuesday, the permanent secretary of th...
Cyber Security Awareness: Staying Secure

Cyber Security Awareness: Staying Secure

International, Science & Technology
Globally, October is recognised as Cybersecurity awareness month. 2022 may have offered some respite from the previous year’s rush to enable a remote and hybrid world, but the increased use of personal devices also left security professionals with even more endpoints to manage and secure. As illustrated by breaches like the March 2022 attack on Shields Health Care Group that impacted two million people and the April ransomware attack that became a national emergency for the Costa Rican government, we all need to be cyber defenders to protect what matters. The FBI describes the impact and losses from cybercrime as “staggering,” with over $4 billion in losses in 2020 alone. The 2020 Internet Crime Report includes information from 791,790 complaints of suspected internet crime—a...
