How foods wrapped in plastic sheets link to prostate, breast cancers, among others
I recently chanced on a video posted on Facebook by the renowned singer, Kofi Kinata lamenting how fante kenkey is now wrapped with plastic rubbers, then covered with the traditional plantain leaves before cooking on the fire.
His concern was that this predispose the consumers to several ailments. Indeed, this is a genuine concern. The fact is that Ga Kenkey is also suffering from this same fate. Additionally, most of our foods prepared at home such as banku are all wrapped in plastic sheets.
I had to educate my junior sister who studied catering in school not to wrap hot banku and foods in plastic rubbers. The dangerous thing is that the leftover banku is further boiled in hot water with these plastic rubbers.

UG ranked Ghana’s number one again, 2nd in West Africa
The University of Ghana has been ranked as the best university in Ghana and second-best in West Africa in the 2023 edition of the Global 2000 list by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).
The University was also considered part of the top 6.1% of world-class universities by the Centre.
This outstanding recognition solidifies the University’s position as the leading institution in Ghana and the second-best in West Africa.
The CWUR’s rigorous assessment process evaluated 20,531 universities worldwide, with only the top 2000 making it to the Global 2000 list.
The rankings were based on seven objective indicators across four areas, which are, education quality, alumni employment, faculty quality, and research performance.

Students Loan Trust Fund names and shames defaulters
The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has published the first batch of the names and details of 30 of its borrowers, who have defaulted in repayment of their loans.
The publications in the Daily Graphic were done on May 17 and May 22.
The loan amounts in default, range from ¢1500 to ¢11,000.
According to the SLTF, the move is in accordance with the Students Loan Trust Fund Act 820, which empowers the SLTF to publish defaulters as one of the necessary steps before prosecution.
Management of the Fund has found the move necessary, as a way of meeting a growing demand for loans from tertiary students.

Ghana Police Service decentralises criminal clearance
The Ghana Police Service has decentralised its criminal clearance service in all 25 Police regions to make it more accessible and convenient for individuals across the country.
A news brief from the Police said effective today, Monday, May 22, 2023, persons seeking criminal clearance could do so in any of the Police regions across the country.
The brief said the Police Regional Commands where the service could be accessed were the Ahafo Regional Police Command, Goaso; Bono Regional Police Command, Sunyani; Bono East Regional Police Command, Techiman; Ashanti Regional Police Command, Kumasi; Ashanti South Regional Police Command, Bekwai, Ashanti North Regional Police Command, Mampong; Tema Regional Police Command, Tema.

Expect more more rains, thunderstorms – Ghana Meteo warns
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) is cautioning Ghanaians to brace themselves for more torrential rains with ravaging lightning storm in the coming months.
There were sparks of thunderstorms on Thursday and over the weekend in parts of the capital, Accra, causing some fear and panic amongst a section of Ghanaians.
“Yeah, there are more thunderstorm rains to come, we have not reached June yet. When we checked the lightning data, June is the peak of lightning. A Ghanaian peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei, Sudan (UNISFA) will receive the 2022 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award.

Ten fire incidents recorded in Accra on Sunday
The Ghana National Fire Service says ten fire incidents were recorded on Sunday, May 21, 2023, in Accra.
This comes after a bakery and some shops were burnt at Kotobabi Abavanna Down and a similar incident at Circle Tiptoe Lane which also led to the destruction of several shops.
Although no casualties were recorded, properties worth thousands of cedis were lost to the inferno on Sunday.

Floods destroy homes and property in Aflao
Torrential rains over the weekend destroyed houses and displaced hundreds of people at Duta and Agbawoeme, two adjoining communities near Diamond Cement at Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region.
