James Webb: Nasa space telescope delivers spectacular pictures

Science & Technology
Stunning images of a "stellar nursery" and a "cosmic dance" have been acquired by Nasa's new $10bn space telescope. The two pictures, and others, were presented to the world on Tuesday to mark the James Webb observatory's readiness to begin science operations. The facility has spent the past six months since launch undergoing testing. Viewed as the successor to the famous Hubble telescope, Webb is expected to be a dominant force for discovery for at least the next 20 years. As it happened: How the first images were unveiled The new observatory is a joint project of the US, European and Canadian space agencies - with Nasa in the lead. Webb has been specially tuned to see the sky in the infrared - that's light at longer wavelengths than can be sensed by our eyes. Thi...

Twitter is suing billionaire Elon Musk to try to force him to buy the social media firm, setting up a legal battle with the world's richest man. It comes after Mr Musk announced he was walking away from his proposed $44bn (£37bn) takeover of Twitter on Friday. Now Twitter has asked a Delaware court to order Mr Musk to complete the merger at the agreed $54.20 per Twitter share. "Having mounted a public spectacle to put Twitter in play, and having proposed and then signed a seller-friendly merger agreement, [Mr] Musk apparently believes that he - unlike every other party subject to Delaware contract law - is free to change his mind, trash the company, disrupt its ope...

Meta’s AI machine translation research helps break language barriers

International, Science & Technology
Meta announced on Wednesday that it has built and open-sourced ‘No Language Left Behind’ NLLB-200. This is a single AI model that is the first to translate across 200 different languages, including 55 African languages with state-of-the-art results. Meta is using the modelling techniques and learnings from the project to improve and extend translations on Facebook, Instagram, and Wikipedia. In an effort to develop high-quality machine translation capabilities for most of the world’s low-resource languages, this single AI model was designed with a focus on African languages. They are challenging from a machine translation perspective. AI models require lots and lots of data to help them learn, and there’s not a lot of human-translated training data for these languages....

Ghanaian scientists identify two germs that cause eye infections in Ghana

Africa News, Ghana News, International, Science & Technology
Appropriate antibiotics for treating eye infections are crucial, especially now that Antimicrobial Resistance has made a considerable incursion in the bacteria treatment space. In Ghana, the treatment of eye infections among eye doctors is based on signs and symptoms without an adequate idea about the exact germs causing them. Therefore, there was the need to find the actual bacteria implicated in the various eye infections in persons reporting to eye hospitals for treatment. Globally, eye infections caused by bacteria are one of the causes of blindness, and the bacteria which causes these infections vary across regions and populations. A joint study by researchers from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, and the University of Ghana, Legon, has ...
