Ghanaian chemist makes headway in HIV cure

A breakthrough research in drug composition for a more effective treatment of HIV has been made. The research which was done within six years found new targets in the HIV virus that drugs can be developed in the treatment of the disease. The research was undertaken by a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, Dr Jerry Joe Harrison.According to him, drugs targets specific proteins in the virus “and this is one that we never knew, and now that we know we can use it to develop more effective drugs against HIV”. The US has killed the leader of al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in a drone strike in Afghanistan, President Joe Biden has confirmed. He was killed in a counter-terrorism operation carried out by the CIA in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Sunday. Mr Biden said Zawahiri had “carved a trail of murder and violence against American citizens”. “Now justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more,” he added. Zawahiri took over al-Qaeda after the death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011. He and Bin Laden plotted the 9/11 attacks together and he was one of the US’s “most wanted terrorists”. A soldier with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has died of Monkeypox in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Health Directorate has said. He was admitted at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital and passed on three days later. He was admitted at the hospital on July 23, 2022 with symptoms of the disease but died on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 while receiving treatment. First case in Upper East Confirming the incident to the media at the weekend, the Upper East Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi, said it was the first case to be recorded in the region.
