Ghana Medical Relief offers free care for 7k residents in Tamale

More than 7,000 residents in Tamale and its environs have received free medical care from the Ghana Medical Relief (GMR), a United States-based non-profit organisation to ensure healthy living.  The five-day free medical outreach at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, held from July 24-28, 2023, provided paediatric urology, dental, and obstetrics services to the people.  The team also registered 3,100 persons in Tamale and its environs in the Northern Region onto the National Health Insurance Scheme for free and conducted 621 dental procedures and extraction.  The exercise was undertaken in collaboration with the John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) Foundation and the Ghana Airforce, who helped airlift all medical supplies from Accra to Tamale and donated various equipment, incl...

Ghanaian TV presenter and journalist Paa Kwesi Asare has won the 2023 BBC News Komla Dumor Award. The 36-year-old is the eighth recipient of the award and the first to come from Ghana, like the late Komla Dumor. Asare is currently the head of business news at Ghana’s private TV3 channel, where he has worked for seven years as one of its main news anchors. The award was created to honour Dumor, a presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014. In a new study, researchers have found an increased risk of liver cancer and chronic liver disease mortality among women who consume sugar-sweetened beverages on a daily basis. Led by researchers at Harvard-affiliated  Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the observational study included nearly 100,000 postmenopausal women from the Women’s Health Initiative. Participants were followed for a median of more than 20 years. Researchers looked at self-reported liver cancer incidence and death due to chronic liver diseases such as fibrosis, cirrhosis, or chronic hepatitis, which were further verified by medical records or the National Death Index.
