Pope Francis prays for Nigerian church attack victims

Pope Francis has prayed for the victims of an attack on a Nigerian church in which at least 25 worshippers were killed by gunmen. A Vatican statement said he had learned of the deaths of dozens of people. The assault took place in the southern town of Owo, in Ondo state. Officials there have warned the number of casualties could rise. They say a priest and other members of the congregation were abducted by the gunmen, whose identity is unknown. Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, has condemned the attack calling it “heinous”. A week ago, the head of the country’s Methodist church was kidnapped; he was released after a ransom was paid. The National Peace Council (NPC) has initiated measures to deepen national unity by tackling the polarisation of the country in the aftermath of last year’s general election. According to the council, political polarisation was a major issue that had the potential to bring about a crisis situation, hence the need to nip it in the bud. The NPC said this at a dialogue for political parties and other stakeholders in Ada in the Greater Accra Region. One of Britain’s top universities has apologised for the “harm” caused to staff after they complained about being sent a photograph of Prince Philip who had a “history of racist and sexist comments”. The photograph of the late Duke opening the university library was included in a recent email bulletin to staff at King’s College London. The value of mobile money transactions has more than doubled in the last twelve months, according to the Bank of Ghana. The total value shot up by over 120 percent from February 2020 to February 2021. On a monthly basis, the value of transactions from January to February saw a minimal increase of about 1 percent. This was contained in the Central Bank’s Summary of Macroeconomic and Financial Data report.
