ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff to meet in Accra today

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff is set to begin its meeting today, Thursday, August 17, in Accra. The emergency two-day summit seeks to finalise plans for the deployment of the standby force to Niger. The West African regional bloc revealed its decision to assemble a standby force while working on other diplomatic means to resolve the crisis in Niger. Soldiers in the West African country of Niger announced a coup on national TV, on July 27. They said they had dissolved the constitution, suspended all institutions and closed the nation’s borders. Sustaining the mental health agenda in Ghana

Ghana has over 2.3 million people living with various mental health conditions, yet mental health care remains a challenge, with a 98% treatment gap. Since 2022, the country has been implementing the Director General’s Special Initiative for Mental Health (DG-SIMH) in four regions to address the gaps and strengthen the standard of mental health and well-being. The five-year initiative supported by the Government of Norway and USAID seeks to get 100 million more people to access quality and affordable mental health services in 12 countries around the world, including Ghana. Daily soft drink linked to increased risk of liver disease

In a new study, researchers have found an increased risk of liver cancer and chronic liver disease mortality among women who consume sugar-sweetened beverages on a daily basis. Led by researchers at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the observational study included nearly 100,000 postmenopausal women from the Women’s Health Initiative. Participants were followed for a median of more than 20 years. Researchers looked at self-reported liver cancer incidence and death due to chronic liver diseases such as fibrosis, cirrhosis, or chronic hepatitis, which were further verified by medical records or the National Death Index. Parliament passes law to criminalise accusations of witchcraft, practice of witchfinders and witch doctors

Parliament has passed a law criminalising the declaration, accusation, naming or labelling of another person as a witch in Ghana. The amendment which was approved on Thursday, also prohibits any person from practicing as a witch doctor or witchfinder. Koforidua Technical University student wins USA Cooking competition in Ghana

A Culinary Arts student of the Koforidua Technical University in the Eastern Region has won this year’s National cooking competition held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.
