Meta OKs deleting Threads without losing Instagram

Lifestyle & Social, Science & Technology
Changes are being rolled out to the Threads app that will enable users to delete their account while keeping the linked Instagram account. An Instagram account is required to sign up to the Twitter-like app, but users were frustrated that it was impossible to delete Threads alone. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri revealed the change in a post on Threads. Initially hailed as a "Twitter-killer", Threads struggled to sustain early record-breaking growth.ADVERTISEMENT In October Mark Zuckerberg, the head of parent-company Meta, revealed that three months on from its July launch the app was attracting around 100 million monthly users - down by more than a half. When Threads was first revealed it was seen as a direct challenge to the Elon Musk-owned X, formerly known as Twitter. ...

‘Overwhelming consensus’ on AI regulation – Musk

Education, International, Science & Technology
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says there was “overwhelming consensus” for regulation on artificial intelligence after tech heavyweights gathered in Washington to discuss AI. Tech bosses attending the meeting included Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google boss Sundar Pichai. Microsoft’s former CEO Bill Gates and Microsoft’s current CEO Satya Nadella were also in attendance. The Wednesday meeting with US lawmakers was held behind closed doors. The forum was convened by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and included tech leaders as well as civil rights advocates. The power of artificial intelligence – for both good and bad – has been the subject of keen interest from politicians around the world. In May, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, testified before a US S...

How to stop Meta from using some of your personal data to train generative AI models.

Ghana News, International, Lifestyle & Social, Science & Technology
Facebook users are now able to delete some personal information that can be used by the company in the training of generative artificial intelligence models. Meta updated the Facebook help center resource section on its website this week to include a form titled “Generative AI Data Subject Rights,” which allows users to “submit requests related to your third party information being used for generative AI model training.” The company is adding the opt-out tool as generative AI technology is taking off across tech, with companies creating more advanced chatbots and turning simple text into sophisticated answers and images. Meta is giving people the option to access, alter or delete any personal data that was included in the various third-party data sources the company uses to...

Instagram owner Meta to launch Twitter rival on Thursday

International, Science & Technology
Facebook owner Meta is launching its new app to rival Twitter and says it will go live on Thursday. The app, which is called Threads and is available for pre-order on the Apple App Store, will be linked to Instagram. Screengrabs show a dashboard that looks similar to Twitter. Meta describes Threads as a “text based conversation app”. The move is the latest in a rivalry between Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter owner Elon Musk. Last month, the pair agreed to a physical fight, though it is unclear how serious the two men were about actually holding a bout. “Thank goodness they’re so sanely run”, Mr Musk responded to a tweet about Threads, in an apparent fresh swipe at Mr Zuckerberg. Meanwhile, Twitter has said that the popular user dashboard, TweetDeck will go behi...
Facebook and Instagram to restrict news access in Canada

Facebook and Instagram to restrict news access in Canada

International, Science & Technology
Meta has said it will begin to restrict news on its platforms to Canadian consumers after parliament passed a controversial online news bill. The bill forces big platforms to compensate news publishers for content posted on their sites. Meta and Google have both already been testing limiting access to news to some Canadians. In 2021, Australian users were blocked from sharing or viewing news on Facebook in response to a similar law. Canada’s Online News Act, which cleared the senate on Thursday, lays out rules requiring platforms like Meta and Google to negotiate commercial deals and pay news organisations for their content. Meta has called the law “fundamentally flawed legislation that ignores the realities of how our platforms work”. On Thursday, it said news availabili...
Meta’s AI machine translation research helps break language barriers

Meta’s AI machine translation research helps break language barriers

International, Science & Technology
Meta announced on Wednesday that it has built and open-sourced ‘No Language Left Behind’ NLLB-200. This is a single AI model that is the first to translate across 200 different languages, including 55 African languages with state-of-the-art results. Meta is using the modelling techniques and learnings from the project to improve and extend translations on Facebook, Instagram, and Wikipedia. In an effort to develop high-quality machine translation capabilities for most of the world’s low-resource languages, this single AI model was designed with a focus on African languages. They are challenging from a machine translation perspective. AI models require lots and lots of data to help them learn, and there’s not a lot of human-translated training data for these languages....
