One Ghanaian delegate goes ‘missing’ after Commonwealth Games

One Ghanaian delegate is said to be among the reported missing athletes and delegates after the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. According to the UK police, the number of missing persons has risen to 17, which includes 13 athletes and four others who were with individual teams. Out of the 17 persons to go missing, eight of them have been found with the remaining eight still unaccounted for. The eight others who are yet to be seen include a Ghanaian, with five others from the Sri Lankan squad. Both a competitor from Botswana and a competitor from Cameroon vanished, but both have since been located. Commonwealth Games: Joseph Paul Amoah wins bronze in men’s 200m event

National 200m record holder, Joseph Paul Amoah, has won bronze medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The sprinter raced in the final of the 200m event on Saturday, August 6, and finished with a time of 20.49s. Joe Paul’s success on Saturday night sees him win Ghana’s first medal in the track event having seen Benjamin Azamati miss out on a medal in the 100m final. Ghana’s 4x100m relay team was also disqualified earlier on Saturday after the coaches did not inform race officials one hour to the race, as the rules require when replacing an athlete. His podium finish sees him become the first African to win a medal in the 200m event since 2006 while he also becomes the first Ghanaian to win a medal in 200m since George Daniels in 1974.

Ghanaian sprinter, Sean Safo-Antwi, has promised to work on his start when he runs in the men's 100 metres semi-final on Wednesday for a place in the final. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Athletics Association, Bawah Fuseini, says media reports that some Ghanaian athletes have been denied visas to the Commonwealth Games 2022 are ‘false’ and should be ‘ignored.’ “Let me state this categorically clear; no Ghanaian athlete was or has been denied any visa,” Bawah told Joy Sports.
