Ghana beat Nigeria in final to win inaugural WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Cup

The Black Princesses of Ghana completed the host and win assignment on Saturday, June 3, as they beat Nigeria in the final of the WAFU Zone B U-20 Cup of Nations. The game at the Baba Yara Stadium travelled to penalty shootouts after both teams scored a goal each within 90 minutes of play. Stella Nyamekye opened the scoring for Ghana in the first half, stepping up from the spot after Comfort Owusu was fouled in the box. The Dreamz Ladies’ midfielder netted her fourth goal of the tournament to give Ghana the lead. Yusif Basigi’s side looked certain to wrap up the game in the second half as they held onto their lead and kept the Nigerians at bay. U20 Women’s World Cup: Ghana play Japan today in likely do-or-die mission

Ghana’s U-20 female team will look to pick up their first point at the ongoing FIFA World Cup when they take on Japan on Sunday, August 14. The game, scheduled for a 17:00 GMT kick off, could see the Black Princesses end their tournament earlier than they would have wanted depending on the other group game between USA and the Netherlands. The Black Princesses were brushed aside by USA in their opening game at the tournament, which is being staged in Costa Rica.  A 3-0 score and a red card to Jacqueline Owusu means Ben Fokuo’s side go into Sunday’s game with a must-win mentality if they are to sail through to the next round.
