TikTok fined €345m over children’s data privacy.

International, Science & Technology
Irish regulators have fined TikTok €345m (£296m) for violating children's privacy. The complaint concerned how the social media app handled children's data in 2020 - particularly around age verification and privacy settings. It is the biggest fine to date TikTok has received from regulators. A spokesperson for the social media firm said it "respectfully disagree[s] with the decision, particularly the level of the fine imposed". "The criticisms are focused on features and settings that were in place three years ago, and that we made changes to well before the investigation even began, such as setting all under 16 accounts to private by default," they said. The fine was issued by Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR...

‘Overwhelming consensus’ on AI regulation – Musk

Education, International, Science & Technology
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says there was “overwhelming consensus” for regulation on artificial intelligence after tech heavyweights gathered in Washington to discuss AI. Tech bosses attending the meeting included Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google boss Sundar Pichai. Microsoft’s former CEO Bill Gates and Microsoft’s current CEO Satya Nadella were also in attendance. The Wednesday meeting with US lawmakers was held behind closed doors. The forum was convened by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and included tech leaders as well as civil rights advocates. The power of artificial intelligence – for both good and bad – has been the subject of keen interest from politicians around the world. In May, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, testified before a US S...

Fossils of ‘alien’ corpses displayed in Mexico’s Congress as UFO expert testifies

Science & Technology, World News
The fossilised bodies presented in glass cases by journalist and UFO scientist Jaime Maussan at Mexico’s parliament are said to be 1,000 years old. The bodies of two alleged “alien” beings were exhibited before politicians in a special session of the Mexican Congress. The fossilised bodies, presented by journalist and UFO scientist Jaime Maussan and displayed in glass cases, were retrieved from Cusco in Peru and are said to be 1,000 years old. “These specimens are not part of the evolution of our world. They were not recovered from a UFO scrap. They were found fossilised in a diatom moss mine,” Maussan said, testifying under oath. The session in the Mexican Congress comes weeks after another in front of the US Congress, but this appearance was much more sensational in its conte...
France halts iPhone 12 sales over radiation levels

France halts iPhone 12 sales over radiation levels

Science & Technology, World News
France has ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 for emitting too much electromagnetic radiation. On Tuesday, the French watchdog which governs radio frequencies also told the tech giant to fix existing phones. The ANFR has advised Apple that if it cannot resolve the issue via a software update, it must recall every iPhone 12 ever sold in the country. But the World Health Organization has previously sought to allay fears about radiation emitted by mobile phones. It says on its website there is no evidence to conclude that exposure to low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to humans. The iPhone 12 was first released in September 2020, and it is still sold worldwide. Apple told the BBC it was contesting the ANFR’s review, and said it had provided the regulator wi...

iPhone 15: Apple forced to ditch lightning charger.

International, Science & Technology, World News
The iPhone 15 has been given a brighter screen and improved camera system Apple has confirmed its new iPhone will not feature its proprietary lightning charging port, after the EU forced the change. The tech giant said that the iPhone 15, unveiled at its annual event on Tuesday, would use a USB-C cable as the "universally accepted standard". A new Apple Watch series was also unveiled with a more advanced chip. But one analyst said a lack of "headline-grabbing" updates from Apple this year would disappoint some. "It isn't a surprise given the maturity of the iPhone and Watch," said Ben Wood from CCS Insight. "It reflects just how refined the iPhone and Watch devices are and how tough it has become to deliver truly disruptive updates every year." Apple released a USB-C-t...
Can new Apple iPhone 15 thunder without lightning?

Can new Apple iPhone 15 thunder without lightning?

Science & Technology
As I write this there are still several hours before Apple unveils the latest version of its best-selling product, the iPhone. In the last few weeks we’ve seen the handset come under pressure separately from both the EU and China. Globally, smartphone sales in general are slowing, and Apple’s highly anticipated virtual reality headset – which the firm seemed to be positioning as a potential future iPhone – won’t go on sale until next year. When it does it will have a whopping $3,500 (£2,780) price tag. And so, in the meantime, we get to meet the 16th generation of a device which changed the smartphone landscape forever when it launched in 2007. It may be, ahem, mature, but it still commands enormous interest today – there are already almost five billion Google search ...

New iPhone, new charger: Apple bends to EU rules

New iPhone, new charger: Apple bends to EU rules

International, Science & Technology
Apple’s latest iPhone will almost certainly feature a USB-C charge point when it is unveiled on 12 September. The firm’s phones currently use its proprietary Lightning adaptor, unlike rivals, including Samsung. A European Union law requires phone manufacturers to adopt a common charging connection by December 2024 to save consumers money and cut waste. Most new Apple products such as the latest iPads already use USB-C, but the firm had argued against the EU rule. When it was introduced in September 2021, an Apple representative told BBC News: “Strict regulation mandating just one type of connector stifles innovation rather than encouraging it, which in turn will harm consumers in Europe and around the world.” Lightning to USB-C adaptors are already available from other elect...

Apple lost $200 billion in two days after reports of iPhone ban in China.

International, Science & Technology, World News
Apple lost $200 billion in two days after reports of iPhone ban in China Shares of Apple fell by 2.9% on Thursday following reports that China plans to expand a ban on the use of iPhones to government-backed agencies and companies. Investors are fretting over the ability of the world’s most valuable public company to do business in the world’s second-largest economy. Apple (AAPL) notched its largest daily fall in over a month on Wednesday. The company lost about $200 billion in two days, and its stock is currently the worst performer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The bans could be an ominous sign for Apple. China is the largest foreign market for the company’s products, and Chinese sales represented about a fifth of the company’s total revenue last year. Apple doesn’t...
