Stay and serve the motherland – Nurses told
The Aflao Sector Commander of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Assistant Commissioner Joseph Allan, has appealed to nurses and midwives to stay and offer their services to the citizenry.
He said nurses and midwives played an integral role in the healthcare system as they were responsible for providing care and support to families and communities including personnel under his Command, hence, the need for them to stay back and serve the country.
Assistant Commissioner Allan made the appeal through his representative at a ceremony to mark this year’s ‘Nurses and Midwives week celebration’ at Aflao under the theme, “Our Nurses and Midwives, Our Future.”

Laid-off Twitter Africa team ‘ghosted’ without severance pay or benefits, former employees say
Former employees of Twitter Africa who were laid off as part of a global cost-cutting measure after Elon Musk’s acquisition have not received any severance pay more than seven months since leaving the company, several sources told CNN.
In late May, the former employees, who were based in the Ghanaian capital Accra, accepted Twitter’s (TWTR) offer to pay them three months worth of severance, the cost of repatriating foreign staff and legal expenses incurred during negotiations with the company.
But they have not received the money or any further communication, the sources said.
“They literally ghosted us,” one former Twitter Africa employee told CNN.

NCA introduces technology neutrality to address Significant Market Power
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has taken a significant step towards correcting market imbalances and boosting consumer choice in the telecommunications sector with the introduction of technology neutrality for non-SMP operators.
According to the Authority, “This initiative will grant Vodafone and AT the authorisation to re-farm their spectrum assignment in the 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 2100MHz bands to provide 4G services, subject to paying an annual premium.”

Google’s ChatGPT rival Bard launches in Europe and Brazil
Google’s parent company Alphabet is rolling out its artificial intelligence chatbot Bard in Europe and Brazil.
It is the product’s biggest expansion since its March launch in the US and the UK and heats up the rivalry with Microsoft’s ChatGPT.
Both are examples of generative AI that can respond to questions in a human-like way.
Bard’s launch in the EU had been held up after the main data regulator in the bloc raised privacy concerns.
The Irish Data Protection Commission said that the tech giant had not provided enough information about how its generative AI tool protects Europeans’ privacy to justify an EU launch.

Ghana to launch new HIV self-testing program
Ghana is set to launch a new HIV self-testing (HIVST) program at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly on July 19, 2023.
The program on the theme “Test Yourself: Know Your Status” is coordinated by the National Planning Committee (NPC) in partnership with the Ministry of Health.
This seeks to make it easier and more convenient for people to get tested for HIV.
According to the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), there are more than 350,000 persons living with HIV.
However, only about 71% of them are aware of their status. The remaining 29%, consequently, pose a major concern as they may, unknowingly, be spreading the virus.

Employers must create HIV/TB policies for the workplace – Ayisi Addo
The National AIDS/STI Control Programme’s (NACP) Programme Manager, Dr Stephen Ayisi Addo, has urged employers to create a workplace HIV/TB policy to help manage and treat employees who have the disease.
A workplace policy is crucial, according to Dr Ayisi Addo, because HIV was a problem that affected people who came to work and could potentially be contracted at the workplace.
“The workplace is a setting for social interaction and physical contact, which makes it possible for infectious diseases like COVID-19 and HIV to spread. Since HIV can be spread through the workplace, it must also be controlled there,” he emphasized.

Member of the Tema Secondary School Old Students Association (TOSA), Kwadwo Owusu Baah, has encouraged final year students in Senior High Schools to pay attention to advantages on social media to create passive income for themselves.

Runway lighting stolen from Nigerian airport
Thieves have stolen the lighting system for one of the runways at Nigeria’s busiest airport just months after it was installed, an airport authority spokesman has confirmed to the BBC.
An investigation has now been launched to “arrest the criminals [and] recover what’s missing”, Yakubu Funtua added.
It is not clear when the system was taken from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
But local media reported that airport workers were involved in the theft.
The ground lights were installed in November, ending years of after-dusk restrictions on landing on that wing of the airport.
Domestic carriers were forced to divert to the international section and taxi about 4km (2.5 miles) back to the right terminal, which caused flight disruptions.
