“A Den of Thieves or A Hospital for Lawbreakers?” – The Ghanaian Perception About the Prisons Service

Ghana News, Pentecost News
On May 13, 2021, Obed Eli Aglidza, 31, was arrested by the New Ayoma Police for attacking and robbing a mobile money vendor at Likpe Kukurantumi in the Oti Region of Ghana. Two weeks later, he was sentenced by a Jasikan Circuit Court to 12 years imprisonment with hard labour. This was after considerable evidence, including a handbag containing a specified amount of money and the mobile phone of the victim, was obtained and presented in court to implicate him. As he was being whisked away in a police vehicle, a visibly shaken Obed could not hide his tears and cast a demeanour of one who had learnt his lesson, albeit the hard way. He would be spending the next decade of his life confined in a facility. And to turn back time, then, as he had wished, was in no mortal man’s capacity to grant...

Clergymen’s reason for visiting galamsey site twisted on social media – Rev. Dr. Fayose

Ghana News, Pentecost News
The General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Cyril Gershon Kwao Fayose, has expressed his displeasure at the commentary some people on social media made when clergymen were captured at an illegal mining (galamsey) site praying. Speaking on The Probe on JoyNews on Sunday, he said that the men of God visited numerous galamsey sites to observe the damage as part of their plans to take drastic action in the fight against the menace. Among other things, Rev Fayose noted that they visited chiefs who complained about the damage done to their communities, sites that were still operational and many other places to engage residents. “We did not go there for the reasons that social media is trying to create. They have literally twisted the reason why we went to the galam...

Ghana should have signed up for Debt Service Suspension Initiative – World Bank President

Ghana News, International
The World Bank Group President, David Malpass, has expressed disappointment over Ghana and Nigeria’s decision not to sign up for the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI). Established in May 2020, the DSSI expired at the end of December 2021. The DSSI, put together by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank offered countries an opportunity to freeze debt servicing, whiles they concentrate on using their minimum funds to deal with other commitments. Mr. Malpass was responding to questions at a programme in Washington DC, on suggestions that the Bretton Wood institutions are not doing enough to help cancel the debts of some African countries in distress. But reacting to the question, he pointed out that Ghana and Nigeria failed to apply for the DSSI, which would ...

Indonesia bans all syrup medicines after death of 99 children

International
The deaths of nearly 100 children in Indonesia have prompted the country to suspend sales of all syrup and liquid medication. It comes just weeks after a cough syrup in The Gambia was linked to the deaths of nearly 70 children. Indonesia said some syrup medicine was found to contain ingredients linked to acute kidney injuries (AKI), which have killed 99 young children this year. It is not clear if the medicine were imported or locally produced. On Thursday, Indonesian health officials said they had reported around 200 cases of AKI in children, most of who were aged under five. Earlier this month, the The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert over four cough syrups that were linked to the deaths of almost 70 children in The Gambia. The WHO found the syrups ...

Pastors should be true examples of Christ – Apostle Eric Nyamekye

Pastors should be true examples of Christ – Apostle Eric Nyamekye

Ghana News, Pentecost News
The Vice Chairman of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Apostle Nyamekye, has urged pastors to live exemplary lives as many look up to them for inspiration and empowerment. He observed that the light which the gospel of Jesus Christ is supposed to shine in the world has become ineffectual because some clergymen are, by their deeds, blocking the light. The Church of Pentecost Chairman referred to instances where some pastors claim to multiply money for their congregants instead of using the Bible to teach them either how to improve themselves or be creative and proactive at work. “People are looking for Jesus in his pastors and they are not seeing it. Ministers are jars of clay containing the light of God. If we want God’s light to shine in the world, then the ve...
