Cocoa production hits record high – yields 1,033 tonnes

Ghana has set a new cocoa production record with 1.033 million tonnes of beans for the 2020/2021 season. This comes six weeks before the 2020/2021 cocoa season gets to a close, which means that the figure can still go up before the harvest period ends. The previous record was 1.024 million tonnes which were recorded in the 2010/2011 season. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Mr. Joseph Boahen Aidoo, announced this at a press conference in Accra yesterday.

A group calling itself the ‘Aggrieved Public Sector Workers’ will stage a demonstration in Accra today, Wednesday, August 18, 2021. The group is embarking on the protest against the 4% salary increment the government has proposed for public sector workers, as well as what it calls poor working conditions and general high cost of living. The group wants public sector salaries to be increased by 25% instead. The Ghana Police Service has given assurances that it will provide security during the protest. University of Ghana’s GHS456,000 locked up in defunct financial firm – Audit report

An amount of GHS456,199.08 invested by the University of Ghana has been locked in a defunct Fund Management Company; Liberty Asset. This was contained in the 2020 Auditor-General’s report, which revealed that the University’s College of Health Sciences and School of Medicine and Dentistry invested the money in contravention of the school’s own financial Regulations and Governance. While the College of Health invested GHS377,003.00, the School of Medicine and Dentistry invested GHS79,196.08. Both investments were made in 2016. “There was no evidence of due diligence report available to continue investment with Liberty Asset in terms of its risk profile”, the report mentioned.

Special anti-armed robbery squad for Eastern, Bono East regions

The AARS special force is to boost the capabilities of the two regional commands to ruthlessly fight robbery and other violent crimes on highways. The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, deployed 227 policemen and senior officers, including 126 personnel, for the Eastern Region, with 101 personnel headed for the Bono East Region. The team for the Eastern Region is led by the Director-General, Administration, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohonu, and assisted by the Director-General of Operations, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr. Mohammed Fuseini Suraji. Over $9million GNPC projects stalled – Audit report

The Auditor-General has warned the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to take steps to secure funding to complete all of its abandoned projects so that costs do not shoot up over time. The Auditor-General in its 2020 report estimated that projects costing over $9 million had not seen any progress over a period of time, which it said could spike up the cost. “These stalled projects could also potentially expose the corporation to negative publicity in the media”, the report stated. Some of the stalled projects include the renovation of the Petroleum House costing over $ 2 million which remains outstanding since 2015. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has recorded 15 deaths within 48 hours in the country’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.In its latest update, Ghana’s death toll as of August 14, is 945. This is as against 930 deaths recorded on August 12.Also, the GHS revealed that the active cases are still on the rise. About 6,265 active cases have been recorded nationwide, with the Greater Accra Region reporting 3,415 of the total cases.One hundred and twenty-eight active cases are severe while 51 others are said to be in a critical condition.
