Morocco earthquake: ‘We need help from whomever will give it’

Africa News, International
In the tiny village of Algou, high in the Atlas Mountains, screams came from under the rubble in the terrifying moments after the earthquake. But as the hours passed and with no specialist rescue teams appearing to assist the desperate efforts of the villagers, the screams turned to silence. Three days on, the Spanish firefighters who were the first professional teams to reach the devastated community hoped time had not run out. As they briskly picked their way through caved-in streets and collapsed archways their experience told them there was, however, no hope. The grim reality was reinforced by the reaction of their dogs. Igor and Teddy had been trained to bark when they found signs of life. The silence was deafening. “There is nothing we can do here,” said Juan Lopez...

Africa News, International, Science & Technology
Vodafone plans to work with Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation Project Kuiper to extend the reach of its 4G and 5G telecoms networks in Europe and Africa. The British mobile operator said Project Kuiper’s high-bandwidth, low-latency satellites would be used to connect mobile base stations in remote locations to its core networks, eliminating the need for fibre-based or fixed wireless links. Amazon is preparing to test two prototype satellites in the coming months before starting to deploy production satellites in 2024 for its network, which will compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink, OneWeb and others. Vodafone and Amazon said they would work to roll out Project Kuiper’s high-speed broadband services to under-served communities around the world, and also offer...

Army officers say they are taking power in Gabon

Africa News, Headlines Today
Army officers have appeared on national television in Gabon to say they have taken power. They said they were annulling the results of Saturday’s election, in which President Ali Bongo was declared the winner. The electoral commission said Mr Bongo had won just under two-thirds of the votes in an election the opposition argued was fraudulent. His overthrow would end his family’s 53-year hold on power in Gabon. Twelve soldiers appeared on television announcing they were cancelling the results of the election and dissolving “all the institutions of the republic”. One of the soldiers said on TV channel Gabon 24: “We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime.” This, he added, was down to “irresponsible, unpredictable governance resulting in a conti...

The foundation has introduced specialized coding training as part of this year’s Africa Code Week programme, aimed at children with special needs in Ghana. This pioneering programme recently converged at the Dzorwulu Special School, where teachers and ...
