Russia's most significant opposition leader for the past decade, Alexei Navalny, has died in prison inside the Arctic Circle, the prison service said. Seen as President Vladimir Putin's most vociferous critic, Navalny was serving a 19-year jail term on charges widely considered politically motivated. He was moved to an Arctic penal colony, considered one of the toughest jails, late last year. The prison service in the Yamalo-Nenets district said he had "felt unwell" after a walk on Friday. He had "almost immediately lost consciousness", it said in a statement, adding that an emergency medical team had immediately been called and tried to resuscitate him but without success. President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday rewarded the Super Eagles of Nigeria with a national award (Member of the Order of the Niger, MON), flats in the Federal Capital Territory, and a piece of land. President Tinubu made the pronouncement when he received the players and officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja. Korle-Bu Renal Unit may shut down due to indebtedness

The renal dialysis unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) is warning of a possible shutdown due to the facility's inability to raise money to purchase consumables for service delivery.  According to the Head of the Unit, Prof. Vincent Boiman, with every dialysis section, the unit loses GH₵380 which is accumulating as debt. Prof. Boiman says the situation is now affecting service delivery and may lead to the shutting down of the unit. Ghana has dropped six places in the latest FIFA World Rankings following their embarrassing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Stars, who finished the 2023 year in the 61st position, have now dropped to 67th on the log globally while also falling further down on the African continent. Ghana now occupies the 14th position on the CAF rankings with Cape Verde, South Africa, DR Congo all moving above the four-time AFCON winners. According to recent data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), January 2024 has been identified as the warmest January globally on record. The average ERA5 surface air temperature for the month was 13.14°C, surpassing the 1991-2020 average for January by 0.70°C and exceeding the temperature of the previous warmest January in 2020 by 0.12°C. This marks the eighth consecutive month where the recorded temperatures set new records for their respective months. Although the global temperature anomaly for January 2024 was lower compared to the last six months of 2023, it remained higher than any anomalies recorded before July 2023.
