The National President of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Joseph Atsu, has expressed concerns with the Electoral Commission’s efforts to make the electoral process accessible to persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Despite efforts by the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections, some PWDs feel overlooked in the decision-making and logistical arrangements.
As Ghana approaches its general elections, concerns have been raised about the inclusivity of the electoral process, particularly for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
Speaking at the International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebration in Kumasi, themed “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future, he stated that several meetings with the Electoral Commission, there is more to be done especially in the area of training.
He further called on the Electoral Commission to implement concrete measures to address these challenges ahead of the elections.
Adding to the call for inclusivity, the National Vice Chairperson for PWDs, Mahamadu Sirina, urged the general public to maintain peace during the elections.
In response, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Francis Osei Nsiah, assured the PWD community that their concerns are being addressed.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities provided an important platform to advocate for an inclusive electoral process, underscoring the need for greater efforts to ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of physical ability, exercises their right to vote.
