Award-winning gospel musician Joe Mettle has called on young Christians to cultivate humility and intentionally seek mentorship, saying spiritual growth and lasting impact are impossible without a teachable spirit.
Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the Pentecost Conference 2026 in Oberhausen, Germany, the celebrated worship leader observed that one of the greatest challenges confronting today’s generation is the reluctance to learn from those who have gone ahead of them.
“The key word is humility,” he said. “People need to understand that they don’t know it all. There is so much they can learn by going to those who have gone ahead of them to be mentored.”
According to him, mentorship should not be measured by who appears more gifted or more knowledgeable, as God often uses life experiences and spiritual maturity to shape His people.
“Sometimes you may even have more of the gift than the person mentoring you,” he explained. “But there are experiences they have had and lessons they have learned from walking with God that can change your life.”
Drawing from Scripture, Joe Mettle pointed to the relationship between Eli and Samuel, noting that although Eli has often been criticised for his shortcomings, God still used him to help the young Samuel recognise His voice.
“Samuel could not identify that it was God speaking, but Eli was the one who pointed him to God’s voice,” he said. “Until we understand that and humble ourselves enough to learn, we will continue to have a lot of problems in this generation.”
He stressed that true mentorship goes beyond talent development and helps believers cultivate discernment, character and spiritual maturity.
Addressing young people who look up to him, Joe Mettle redirected the focus away from himself and towards Christ.
“We all strive to be like Christ,” he said. “I’m just a normal guy.”
He encouraged believers and seekers alike to pursue a deeper relationship with Jesus, describing Him as the source of life and the answer to life’s deepest questions.
“If you don’t know Jesus, I just want to proclaim Him to you,” he said. “He is the reason for our being. He is the source of our life, and when you get to know Him, the questions in your mind and the things you want to understand become clearer than ever.”
Joe Mettle’s remarks came as participants at the Pentecost Conference 2026 reflected on the importance of discipleship, leadership development and raising a generation grounded in Christ and equipped to influence the world.
