MAN: THE REPRESENTATIVE OF GOD IN HIS IMAGE AND GLORY ON EARTH
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…’” (Genesis 1:26a).
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).
Among all God’s works of creation, man occupies a unique position. Unlike the rest of creation, which came into existence through God’s spoken command, man was created according to God’s own image and likeness. This distinction reveals both the dignity and responsibility entrusted to humanity. Man was created not merely to inhabit the earth but to represent God, reflect His character, display His glory, and exercise stewardship under divine authority. While this calling touches every sphere of life, it finds one of its clearest expressions within the family through the God-given roles of husband and father. Thus, representing God’s image and glory is not merely an abstract theological concept but a practical responsibility lived out daily in marriage, fatherhood, and family leadership.
Man in God’s Original Purpose
God’s original purpose for man is revealed in Genesis 1:28, where He blessed humanity and commanded them to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, and exercise dominion over creation. Man was appointed as God’s steward and representative within the created order. The psalmist marvelled at this privileged position: “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?… For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour” (Psa. 8:4-5). Man was crowned with glory and honour because he was created to bear God’s image. His authority was never intended to be autonomous but exercised in submission to the Creator whose character he was called to reflect. From the beginning, God’s purpose included the establishment of families through which His image, truth, and glory would be displayed and transmitted from generation to generation. Consequently, man’s representative role extends beyond his relationship with creation to his responsibilities within the home.
The Image and Glory of God in Man
The apostle Paul writes: “For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God” (1 Cor. 11:7). To be created in God’s image means that man was designed to reflect God’s moral character, righteousness, wisdom, and authority. Likewise, man is described as God’s glory because his life is intended to display God’s excellence and goodness. This image is not reflected primarily through physical appearance but through character and conduct. A man honours God when he walks in righteousness, integrity, humility, faithfulness, and obedience.
Although sin marred humanity’s ability to reflect God fully, God’s redemptive plan through Jesus Christ provides restoration. Through salvation and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, believers are progressively transformed into the image of Christ, who is the perfect image of God. As men grow in Christlikeness, they become better equipped to fulfil their calling as God’s representatives in their homes and communities.
Man as God’s Representative in Marriage
When Jesus addressed questions concerning marriage, He directed His listeners back to God’s original design: “Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female” (Matthew 19:4). By pointing to creation, Jesus affirmed that marriage is a divine institution established by God. It is one of the primary contexts in which a man demonstrates his calling as God’s representative.
The New Testament further teaches that marriage reflects the relationship between Christ and His Church. Therefore, the husband’s role is patterned after Christ Himself. “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church” (Ephesians 5:23). Biblical headship does not imply domination but loving responsibility, sacrificial service, and spiritual leadership. Just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her, husbands are called to love their wives sacrificially (Eph. 5:25).
Through such leadership, provision, protection, and care, a husband reflects God’s faithfulness, love, and concern for those entrusted to him. In this way, marriage becomes a visible expression of God’s image and glory.
Man as God’s Representative in Fatherhood
Closely connected to marriage is the sacred responsibility of fatherhood. Just as God reveals Himself as Father, earthly fathers are called to reflect His character to their children. A father’s role extends beyond physical provision. He is responsible for instruction, discipline, encouragement, spiritual leadership, and godly example. Proverbs 22:6 teaches the importance of training children in the way they should go. Through such faithful guidance, fathers help shape their children’s understanding of truth, authority, love, and ultimately their understanding of God Himself. Because of this influence, fatherhood is one of the clearest ways in which a man represents God on earth. When fathers demonstrate integrity, compassion, faithfulness, patience, and wisdom, they make God’s character visible within the family and help pass on His truth to future generations.
The Consequences of Neglecting God’s Purpose
When men neglect their God-given responsibilities as husbands and fathers, the consequences extend far beyond the individual. Families become weakened, marriages suffer, children lack proper guidance, and communities experience the effects of broken leadership. The absence of godly male leadership hinders God’s design for transmitting faith and biblical values from one generation to the next. Scripture reminds us that every steward will one day give an account to God for how he has managed the responsibilities entrusted to him. Therefore, men must approach their roles with seriousness, humility, and dependence upon God.
Conclusion
Man was created in the image and glory of God to serve as His representative on earth. This divine calling is most clearly demonstrated through a life that reflects God’s character and fulfils His purposes. Within the family, this calling finds practical expression through marriage and fatherhood. As a husband, a man reflects Christ’s love and leadership toward his wife. As a father, he reflects God’s care, instruction, and faithfulness toward his children. Through these sacred responsibilities, God’s image and glory become visible in everyday life.
Through redemption in Christ, men are being restored to God’s original purpose and empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfil their calling. As they walk in obedience to God, lead their families faithfully, and model Christlike character, they become effective representatives of God in the world. May every Christian man embrace this sacred responsibility and faithfully reflect the image and glory of God until the earth is filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord. Amen.
