
The Ghana Police Service has intensified its clampdown on illegal mining activities in the Western Region, leading to the arrest of 23 individuals and the disarming of multiple mining machines.
As part of an intelligence-led operation, police personnel carried out targeted raids in the Wassa Akropong District. During the operation along the Wassa Akropong–Japa–Dadieso road, 23 suspects were apprehended. The team further extended its efforts to the Obeng Mining Group site at Wassa Japa, where 64 changfan machines were disabled to disrupt illegal mining operations.
In another operation at Wassa Dominase, officers responded to a tip-off about illegal mining activities near the Goil and Energy Oil filling stations along the Agona Amenfi–Gyedua Kesse Junction Road. There, seven changfan machines and several washing boards were destroyed, while three water pumping machines and a pickaxe were retrieved.
Meanwhile, in Asankrangwa, police acted on intelligence regarding galamsey activity near the One District One Factory (1D1F) building along the Asankra Saah–Asankra Kwabeng road. This operation led to the retrieval of three water pumping machines and four motorbikes suspected to have been used in illegal mining.
All arrested suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with investigations. The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out illegal mining and protecting the country’s natural resources.
