Construction works on a new China Mall project near the Kenkey Factory Traffic Light area in Koforidua have been temporarily suspended following an order from the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey.
The Minister’s directive comes in response to complaints from residents in the area, who claim that the activities of the Chinese developers have worsened flooding in their homes.
The project, spearheaded by Chinese investors, is situated on a parcel of land recently acquired near the Kenkey Factory Traffic Light. However, land preparation and construction-related activities have reportedly disrupted the natural flow of water, resulting in severe flooding in nearby residential areas.
Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey has instructed the developers to halt all ongoing works to enable a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to be conducted.
According to the Minister, a team comprising officials from the Regional Coordinating Council, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other relevant stakeholders will, from next week, embark on an inspection tour of flood-prone areas within the region. The goal is to implement proactive measures to mitigate flooding risks, especially as the rainy season approaches.
The decision by the Minister has been welcomed by affected residents, who hope that the intervention will provide lasting solutions to the perennial flooding challenges in the area.
