The Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has condemned the persistent forest and environmental degradation, stating that its associated climate change is threatening the sustainability of the world’s economy and the survival of mankind.
Addressing a gathering at the launch of the ‘’One Student-One Tree Project’’, an initiative by the Okyenman to commemorate this year’s Green Ghana Day, Okyenhene bemoaned the fast rate at which the forest reserves and the environment are damaged through human illegal activities.
‘’The trees, the rivers, and the wildlife are not just resources for mere exploitation but treasures that must be cherished and protected for generations to come’’, Okyenhene propounded.
He attributed the impacts of hurricanes on European countries to climate change due to environmental challenges, stating that by the mercies of God Ghana was fortunate to be spared from such disasters.
Okyenhene however, tasked students and the youth to be guardians of the forest, learning about the significance of conservation and inspiring their peers to join the campaign.
On his part, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament of Damango Constituency, Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor commended Okyenhene for his conservationist ideology and bold decision to champion same in the last 25 years of his reign as Okyenhene.
He emphasized the significant role trees continue to play in fighting climate change issues.
He therefore admonished heads of second-cycle institutions to cooperate with the planning committee to ensure the successful commemoration of this year’s Green Ghana Day.
The One Student – One Tree Project, is an initiative by the Abuakwa State spearheaded by the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin as part of activities to mark his 25th anniversary celebration.
