Undersea fibre optic disruptions affect internet service in Ghana

There is a nationwide internet disruption in Ghana and according to the National Communications Authority (NCA), it is due to outages on multiple submarine fibre optic cables that connect Ghana. The NCA in a press statement explained that multiple undersea cable disruptions have affected Mobile and Fixed Data services nationwide in Ghana. It said the disruptions affecting the multiple undersea cables responsible for carrying international traffic have occurred in Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire. There are also some disruptions in Portugal, it added.  This has led to a significant degradation of data services across Ghana. Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced a visa-free regime for all foreign nationals travelling into Ghana effective December 1, 2023. Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Ampratwum Sarpong, in an interview with JoyNews' Blessed Sogah, explained that the policy is in response to 'December in Ghana'. The Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Joe Anokye, has revealed that 5G wireless data communication will soon be made available to mobile carriers. He, however, hinted at a policy revision to make this possible. "We have made sure that the spectrum required for five 5G is available. There are few policies that must be made as to exactly how spectrum will be made available. "It is very complicated, because of the way the market is, we don't want to proceed and only one entity will have the capability of acquiring the 5G," he explained. Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) has implemented an upward review of its voice and data prices for most of its products and services for both pre-paid and post-paid customers. The new pricing takes effect on Tuesday, November 28. The price review impacts voice, SMS (text messaging) and data including Fiber Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access (4G Router/Turbonet) customers. According to the telco, "The review has become necessary due to increased operational costs. The review will allow MTN Ghana to continue to make the investments required to sustain its business going forward."
