Elon Musk’s Neuralink shows first brain-chip patient playing chess.

International, Science & Technology, World News
The first patient to receive a brain chip from Elon Musk's company Neuralink has appeared to play online chess. Neuralink released a nine-minute video in which the patient, who is paralysed below his shoulders, appears to move a cursor across a laptop screen with nothing but his thoughts. The video shows him playing chess and turning off the laptop's music. The patient, who had not been previously identified, said in the live stream video that his name is Noland Arbaugh, 29, who was paralyzed below the shoulder after a driving accident. Mr Arbaugh received an implant from the company in January and could control a computer mouse using his thoughts, Musk said last month. Musk previously said the aim of the brain chip is to eventually allow users with disabil...

Elon Musk says X to have two new premium tiers

International, Science & Technology
Elon Musk has said his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, will launch two new tiers of premium subscriptions. "One is lower cost with all features, but no reduction in ads, and the other is more expensive, but has no ads," the billionaire said in a post on X. It comes as the firm started charging new users $1 in New Zealand and the Philippines for accessing the platform. Mr Musk did not provide more details on the plans. New users who opt out of subscribing will only be able to take "read only" actions, such as reading posts, watching videos, and following accounts, the company said in its website. Mr Musk has long said that his solution for getting rid of bots and fake accounts on the social media platform is charging for the service. Sin...

EU warns Elon Musk ‘disinformation’ is spreading on X after Hamas attack

International
The EU has warned Elon Musk that X is being used to spread "disinformation" after Hamas' attack on Israel. In a post on the site formerly known as Twitter, the bloc's industry chief said "violent and terrorist content" had not been taken down, despite warnings - as is required by EU law. Mr Musk said his company had taken action, including by removing newly-created Hamas-affiliated accounts. He asked the EU to list the alleged violations. Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market of the European Union, did not give details on the disinformation he was referring to in his letter to Mr Musk. However, he said that instances of "fake and manipulated images and facts" were widely reported on the social media platform. "I therefore invite you to urgently ensure that...

Elon Musk: Social media platform X could go behind paywall

International, Science & Technology
Elon Musk has suggested that all users of X, formerly called Twitter, may have to pay for access to the platform. In a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the billionaire said a payment system was the only way to counter bots. "We're moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the system," the Tesla and SpaceX boss said. The BBC approached X for further details but has not yet received a statement from the company. It is unclear whether this was just an off-the-cuff comment, or a signal of firmer plans that have yet to be announced. Mr Musk has long said that his solution for getting rid of bots and fake accounts on the social media platform is charging for verification. Since taking over Twitter last year he has looked to incentivise use...

Twitter to charge $20 per month for verification badge

International, Science & Technology
Just days after Elon Musk takes charge of Twitter, Elon Musk is reportedly working towards some major changes. The changes are set to be introduced in the Twitter Blue subscription and even the verification process which provides a ‘Blue tick’ to verified accounts. The Twitter Blue subscription will reportedly be linked to the Twitter Blue subscription and Musk also plans to hike the subscription prices considerably.  According to a report by The Verge, Musk plans to charge users $19.99 for the new Twitter Blue subscription. Furthermore, Twitter accounts that already have the verification, will have to comply with this new mechanism and pay up for the blue tick. The report suggests that verified users will have a total 90 days to move to Twitter Blue or they will end up l...

Twitter sues Elon Musk over $44bn takeover deal

Science & Technology
Twitter is suing billionaire Elon Musk to try to force him to buy the social media firm, setting up a legal battle with the world's richest man. It comes after Mr Musk announced he was walking away from his proposed $44bn (£37bn) takeover of Twitter on Friday. He claimed Twitter had not given information about the number of fake and spam accounts on the platform. Now Twitter has asked a Delaware court to order Mr Musk to complete the merger at the agreed $54.20 per Twitter share. "Having mounted a public spectacle to put Twitter in play, and having proposed and then signed a seller-friendly merger agreement, [Mr] Musk apparently believes that he - unlike every other party subject to Delaware contract law - is free to change his mind, trash the company, disrupt its op...
