GRIDCO Restores Power After Nationwide Outage, Assures Improved Stability

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has announced the full restoration of electricity supply following a widespread system disturbance on Thursday, April 3, 2024. The outage impacted several regions, including Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, Techiman, Bui, Tumu, Sawla, and other areas in northern Ghana. The disruption, which occurred at 8:09 p.m., was traced to a fault on the Tafo–Nkawkaw transmission line. Attempts to restore the line caused adjacent transmission lines to trip, resulting in a significant loss of power generation and affecting the national grid. By 10:57 p.m., GRIDCo’s System Control Centre had successfully stabilized the grid and restored full power. Ghana has made significant progress in extending electricity access across the country, particularly the rural areas. However, the recently published Ghana Living Standards Survey (Ghana Statistical Service, 2019) indicates that regions in the northern parts of the country have much lower access to electricity, compared to regions in the southern parts of the country. One of the communities in the northern part of the country that is yet to be connected to the national grid is Kultamise, a farming community in the Pusiga district in the Upper East Region.
