Ban on church noise still in force – Ga Traditional Council

Ban on church noise still in force – Ga Traditional Council

Ghana News, Headlines Today, Lifestyle & Social
The Ga Traditional Council Wednesday reiterated that the use of Public Address Systems by churches and other institutions outlawed as part of the ban on drumming and noisemaking remains in force. The Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II said at no point had the members of the Ga Traditional Council endorsed the usage of microphones and public address systems by the clergy or any other at reduced volume in auditoriums and other institutions. A statement from the Ga Traditional Authority, signed by the Ga Mantse and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said though the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs set out to clarify the requirements of the ban on drumming and noisemaking, it was misleading to say that churches could use public address systems at reduced volumes dur...

Ghana school students talk about their social media addiction, and how it affects their use of English

Ghana News, Lifestyle & Social, Science & Technology
Social media networks such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube and Instagram have been shown to have significantly transformed student behaviour. But the focus has been on students’ social behaviour. And on how the English language is being spoken because of social media use. The relationship between social media and students’ English language writing has been largely ignored. Our team of four researchers who specialize in language studies set out to study the relationship between social media use and English language performance. We studied one English as a Second Language class at Fiaseman Senior High School in Tarkwa, western Ghana. English is Ghana’s official language and is the medium of instruction for all levels of education. We learnt from the students th...

Visiting green spaces 3-4 times weekly may lower your need for meds, according to new study

Health & Wellbeing, Lifestyle & Social
Hanging out in a local park, lake, or garden really could be an antidote to ill health for people who live in cities, according to a recent study from Finland. Researchers found lower use of drugs for depression, anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, and asthma among urban residents who often visit green spaces—regardless of their income or level of education. The Finnish team said that the frequency of visits to urban green spaces, rather than simply viewing them from your house, was key. Previous studies have suggested that exposure to natural environments is good for health and well-being, but the evidence is inconsistent. The Finnish team looked at the number of green and blue spaces (bodies of water) within a community, then compared those to both the frequency of visits...
Aristotle’s 2000-year-old advice on friendships

Aristotle’s 2000-year-old advice on friendships

Lifestyle & Social
“In poverty as well as in other misfortunes, people suppose that friends are their only refuge. And friendship is a help to the young, in saving them from error, just as it is also to the old, with a view to the care they require and their diminished capacity for action stemming from their weakness; it is a help also to those in their prime in performing noble actions, for ‘two going together’ are better able to think and to act.”—Aristotle. A few months ago, together with a group of friends, we talked about the value of friendships. Though it escalated into a two-hour argument with lots of differing views, it was a positive discussion that left me with much contemplation. On one side of the argument, the rationalists argued that all friendships and relationships were transactional, ...
