Ghana should have signed up for Debt Service Suspension Initiative – World Bank President

Ghana News, International
The World Bank Group President, David Malpass, has expressed disappointment over Ghana and Nigeria’s decision not to sign up for the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI). Established in May 2020, the DSSI expired at the end of December 2021. The DSSI, put together by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank offered countries an opportunity to freeze debt servicing, whiles they concentrate on using their minimum funds to deal with other commitments. Mr. Malpass was responding to questions at a programme in Washington DC, on suggestions that the Bretton Wood institutions are not doing enough to help cancel the debts of some African countries in distress. But reacting to the question, he pointed out that Ghana and Nigeria failed to apply for the DSSI, which would ...

Indonesia bans all syrup medicines after death of 99 children

International
The deaths of nearly 100 children in Indonesia have prompted the country to suspend sales of all syrup and liquid medication. It comes just weeks after a cough syrup in The Gambia was linked to the deaths of nearly 70 children. Indonesia said some syrup medicine was found to contain ingredients linked to acute kidney injuries (AKI), which have killed 99 young children this year. It is not clear if the medicine were imported or locally produced. On Thursday, Indonesian health officials said they had reported around 200 cases of AKI in children, most of who were aged under five. Earlier this month, the The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert over four cough syrups that were linked to the deaths of almost 70 children in The Gambia. The WHO found the syrups ...

Pastors should be true examples of Christ – Apostle Eric Nyamekye

Ghana News, Pentecost News
The Vice Chairman of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Apostle Nyamekye, has urged pastors to live exemplary lives as many look up to them for inspiration and empowerment. He observed that the light which the gospel of Jesus Christ is supposed to shine in the world has become ineffectual because some clergymen are, by their deeds, blocking the light. The Church of Pentecost Chairman referred to instances where some pastors claim to multiply money for their congregants instead of using the Bible to teach them either how to improve themselves or be creative and proactive at work. “People are looking for Jesus in his pastors and they are not seeing it. Ministers are jars of clay containing the light of God. If we want God’s light to shine in the world, then the ve...

South Africa president scraps free electricity, water for ministers

Africa News, International
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has withdrawn controversial perks for cabinet ministers and their deputies that saw their homes supplied with free electricity and water. The benefits caused a public outcry as they were considered insensitive at a time South Africans are struggling with daily power cuts and rising cost of living. In a press briefing on Monday evening, a spokesman said the president “acknowledges and appreciates the public sentiments on the matter”. The ministerial handbook, which outlines ministerial benefits, will be “aligned to the realities that many South Africans face”, presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya said. He said the intention behind the perks was “not a nefarious one”. “The intention was to try and find some form of balance between wh...

From Eric’s Diary: The ‘Galamsey’ fight – role of the stomach

Ghana News
It is trite knowledge that there are some aspects of the functioning of the human body that we as humans have very little control over. They include nature’s call – urinate and or defecate, sleep and hunger. They come when they may. I have explained here before that like the computer experiences forced shutdown when there is a problem, sleep is a signal that the body is tired. It is for this reason that sleep can occur even when one is supposedly engaged in activities such as listening to a sermon in church, attending lectures, participating in a meeting or even while driving. Similarly, hunger occurs when the body needs food. Although it is possible for humans to go without food, that is only for a while. That is why Christians who for one reason or the other need to fast, find a...
