Fishers in coastal communities have expressed mixed reactions to the upcoming closed fishing season, citing a number of factors, especially the current economic challenges facing the country. While some of them have called for the scraping of the closed season because it is unproductive, others have asked that it must be suspended as a result of the harsh economic conditions. On the other hand, some of them have indicated that the closed season is a good intervention but it needs proper implementation. A virologist at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR), Dr Michael Owusu, says the country is currently experiencing its fifth wave of the coronavirus. The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has announced he would convene an emergency committee meeting on Thursday, June 23 to assess the implication of the outbreak of the monkeypox virus. The Ministry of Education has launched investigations into Monday’s chaos on the campus of Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi. At least 30 students of the school were hospitalised following a clash between irate students and crowd-control police there. The students were protesting against pedestrian knockdowns involving some students and teachers of the school.
