Hepatitis B, C epidemic hits northern Ghana
It is estimated that about 2.8 million people have hepatitis B, while nearly 500,000 have hepatitis C in the country.
The condition has disproportionately higher burdens and mortality in the Upper East, Upper West, North East, Savannah, and Northern regions.
These came to light when Ghana joined the world to celebrate the 2024 World National Hepatitis Day last Friday, with a commitment to combat the health condition, improve public health and achieve broader health goals by 2030.
The event, organised by the Greater Accra Region Health Service and the Ablekuma-North Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Accra Cantonments-East, aimed to increase awareness and promote preventive measures.

Govt opens recruitment for 15,200 nurses, midwives
The Ministry of Health has announced the opening of recruitment for 15,200 nurses and midwives, following the issuance of financial clearance by the Ministry of Finance.
This significant move aims to bolster the healthcare workforce and improve service delivery across the country.
The recruitment process will begin on Monday, 5th August 2024, at 12:00 noon.
Qualified applicants are invited to submit their applications via the Ministry of Health’s online application portal.
Interested individuals should visit https://hr.moh.gov.gh to log in and select their preferred agency within the Ministry.
All applications must be submitted by Friday, 23rd August 2024, at 6:00 pm.

The Director of the Youth Ministry of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Ebenezer Hagan, has urged Christian youth to make it their lifelong desire to wait on the Lord for the infilling of the Holy Spirit for greater exploits.
Apostle Ebenezer Hagan said this yesterday when he joined the Odorkor Area to officially Kickstart this year’s National Youth Ministry Week Celebration.
Speaking on the topic “Empowerment From On High,” using Luke 24:47-49, Acts 1:6-8, Acts 2:1, and Ezekiel 47 as scripture references, he emphasised the necessity of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer, especially the Christian youth.

Asuogyaman MP Advocates for Budget Allocation to Maintain Existing Infrastructure
The Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, is advocating for dedicated budget allocations to state institutions to undertake continuous planned maintenance, rehabilitation, and renovation of existing infrastructure to save the country from financial waste.
Thomas Ampem Nyarko, who was recently appointed Chairman of the newly created Budget Committee of Parliament, stressed the situation where attention is often given to constructing new projects without a maintenance plan. This, he noted, results in significant financial losses as infrastructure does not serve its intended lifespan.
According to him, the phenomenon where everyone wants to start new projects for public praise, often ignoring already existing infrastructure in Ghana is worrying.
