In a startling revelation, road crashes in Ghana have claimed 2,038 lives within the past 10 months, according to data from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
This alarming figure underscores the dire need for improved road safety measures across the country.
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has identified speeding, reckless driving, and poor road conditions as major contributors to this rising trend.
The data also reveals over 7,500 injuries during this period, reflecting the widespread impact of traffic accidents on Ghanaians.
In an interview with PENT NEWS, the Public Relations Officer of the National Road Safety Authority Mrs. Pearl Adusu Sateckla, stated that the enforcement of traffic law plays a significant role in combating road crashes.
She also urged drivers to prioritise safety and adhere to speed limits, while highlighting the need for better enforcement of traffic regulations.
“While educating individuals and creating awareness about road safety is important, it ultimately depends on the person whether they will take the message seriously. If they do not, it can lead to road crashes and fatalities.
“However, when enforcement is strictly applied, and road users—whether pedestrians or drivers—adhere to traffic rules, it can help significantly reduce road crashes and improve safety on our roads,” she said.
