Newly called missionaries and ministers have been urged to continually rekindle and develop the spiritual gifts God has entrusted to them, recognising that effective missionary work depends not only on divine calling but also on sustained spiritual discipline.
Speaking on “Continuous Stirring of the Gifts for Missions” during the day one of the 2026 Orientation Course for newly called missionaries and ministers completing their Ministerial Formation, Apostle Dr Amos Jimmy Markin, Cape Coast Area Head and Executive Council Member of The Church of Pentecost, highlighted the indispensable role of the Holy Spirit in fulfilling the Church’s missionary mandate.
Quoting 2 Timothy 1:6, he reminded participants to “stir up the gift of God,” explaining that every minister must intentionally nurture and activate the spiritual gifts imparted through the Holy Spirit rather than allowing them to become dormant.
According to Apostle Jimmy Markin, the Holy Spirit remains the principal actor in Christian mission, dwelling in believers, anointing them for service, releasing spiritual gifts, and empowering them for ministry. He explained that while every believer receives the Holy Spirit, the full manifestation of divine power for ministry is experienced through the baptism and continual infilling of the Spirit.
He noted that the most important spiritual gift is the one God provides to accomplish a specific assignment at a particular time and place, adding that a minister’s calling is ultimately defined by the combination of divine graces and gifts operating in his or her life.
Offering a word of caution, Apostle Dr Jimmy Markin stressed that ministers should never build their ministries solely on spiritual gifts. Instead, he encouraged them to prioritise faithful preaching of the Word of God, describing it as the foundation upon which every genuine ministry is built. He further reminded participants that no one appoints himself into ministry, as God’s work is characterised by divine calling, commissioning and order.
The Apostle likened spiritual power to virtue that can be depleted through ministry and therefore requires continual renewal. He explained that while every believer receives spiritual gifts in measure, greater effectiveness comes through deeper fellowship with the Holy Spirit.
He defined “stirring up” as intentionally rekindling, activating and nurturing the gifts God has placed within believers. To achieve this, he encouraged the participants to maintain daily devotion, consistent prayer, regular Scripture study and meditation, fasting, unwavering faith, sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and the continual practice of spiritual gifts. He also highlighted praying in tongues as one of the means by which believers strengthen themselves spiritually.
Apostle Dr Jimmy Markin reminded the missionaries that possessing the nations is not a temporary assignment but the lifelong responsibility of every Christian. He urged them to depend continually on the Holy Spirit through Spirit baptism and daily infilling to fulfil the Great Commission and transform nations with the Gospel.
