The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye, has declared that Jesus Christ died as a substitute for humanity, bearing the punishment meant for sinners.
He made this assertion on Friday, April 3, 2026, while ministering at the New Edubiase Zone in the Obuasi Area during the 2026 Easter Convention on the theme, “Jesus, Our Passover Lamb.”
Expounding on the subject, Apostle Nyamekye explained that sin represents humanity’s separation from God, which manifests in various forms of evil. Referencing John 1:29, he noted that Jesus Christ came to reconcile humanity to God by taking away the sin of the world.
Drawing a distinction between the Old Testament sacrificial system and the New Covenant, he explained that the blood of animals under the Passover only provided temporary covering for sin. In contrast, he said, Jesus Christ came as the perfect Lamb whose sacrifice completely takes away sin.
“The sacrificial lamb was a substitute,” he stated. “Instead of man dying for his sins, God provided a lamb whose blood paid the penalty. Jesus Christ has now become that ultimate substitute for humanity.”
He likened the salvation experience to the account of Rahab, indicating that just as the scarlet cord preserved her household, the blood of Jesus secures all who put their trust in Him.
Touching on the circumstances surrounding Christ’s birth, Apostle Nyamekye noted that His birth in a manger symbolically aligns with the practices of shepherds who carefully handled spotless lambs prepared for sacrifice. He referenced Luke 2:8–16, explaining that Bethlehem—a town known for shepherding—played a significant role in God’s redemptive plan, as the announcement of Christ’s birth was first made to shepherds who understood the value of a perfect lamb.
He further cited John 13:1 to emphasise that Jesus was fully aware of His mission as the sacrificial Lamb and recognised the appointed time to offer Himself for the sins of the world.
“Because Jesus died, He has become our substitute; He died the death that was required of us,” he affirmed.
