ACCRA, GHANA – July 7, 2025 – Ghana has successfully secured a $30 million grant from the People’s Republic of China, earmarked for the construction of a modern market in Aflao. This development comes on the express instructions of President John Mahama, fulfilling a key promise made during his 2024 electioneering campaign.

The grant agreement was officially signed today at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana, while His Excellency Tong Defa, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, signed for the Chinese Government.

This significant grant mirrors a similar financial commitment from China that facilitated the construction of the impressive Kotokuraba market in Cape Coast during the Mills/Mahama era.

The new, modern Aflao market is anticipated to significantly boost economic activity in the region. Strategically located, it is expected to foster stronger trade links between the markets of Ho in Ghana and Lome in Togo, thereby enhancing livelihoods in an enclave recognized as a major West African trading hub.
