The Director of the Pent Media Centre, Pastor Dr Felix Dela Klutse, has underscored the urgent need for Africa to move beyond extractive, carbon-intensive models of development and fully embrace the green economy.
Speaking at the maiden West African Green Economy Roundtable & Awards, held on September 24, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel, Pastor Dr Klutse noted that the region stands at a critical crossroads where economic growth must be balanced with environmental sustainability.
He highlighted the threats posed by rapid urbanisation, industrialisation, and climate change, which continue to undermine long-term prosperity and social well-being. To secure a resilient future, he stated, West Africa must accelerate the transition to a green economy, driving sustainable production, fostering economic resilience, ensuring efficient resource use, and promoting inclusive growth.
He indicated that real change begins with real conversation, stressing that the event aimed to facilitate a collaborative marketplace of ideas, innovations, and partnerships to accelerate the region’s transition to sustainable development.
Quoting Barack Obama, former US president, Pastor Dr Klutse reminded the audience that “we are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change, and the last that can do something about it.”
He also highlighted the importance of agriculture in sustaining lives, supporting communities, and anchoring culture, stating, “Nobody drinks oil, but everyone consumes food.”
The West Africa Green Economy Roundtable (WAGER) 2025 was designed as a strategic convening platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, challenge each other, and spark real action. It brought together industry leaders, policymakers, financiers, academics, and civil society organisations to discuss the region’s transition to a green economy.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony, recognising best practices, innovative solutions, and leadership in promoting green growth in West Africa.
